all of sudden, all finder windows on my iMac show the details in grey.
I have attached a screen shot.

Any notions as to why and how to remedy this?

I found this rather annoying myself. It makes the columns hard to read. It seems someone thought the name of a file is much more important than the other info. I find the gray harder to discern at a glance, especially alongside black - which is the whole idea behind making inactive or disabled GUI objects dimmed/gray.

I took the time to submit feedback at apple.com (for OS X) and suggest others do the same. I've gotten used to it, to a certain extent, but still think it was a mistake in design.

There is nothing wrong with your Mac. That grey is how Finder columns are shown by default in Mavericks. I am not aware of a way to change it.

There aren't many ways to customize the Finder. And it has lagged for years (decades?).

I'd suggest using an alternative: Path Finder, XtraFinder, etc. Far more customizable, finds better, gives more info, easier to use, etc etc. And it has full black text in the list view for your viewing pleasure.
