Hello everyone, I just recently got a deal from an ebay seller for a brand new 15" rMBP core i7, 2.7 ghz, 512gb SSD, 16gb RAM, 2013 model for $1700. It was just too good a deal to pass up and I figured worse case scenario if haswell is THAT much better I can sell this one used for probably more than I bought it for. Anyway I haven't gotten it yet it will arrive sometime next week, but I was just wondering since it's so close to Mavericks will I be able to get a free upgrade when it comes out? I don't know how this works with Apple, this will be my first mac literally ever.

so how did it go? was it real deal?

I'll know Tuesday there was a delay so the seller said it'll be shipped for then definitely. I will update this thread and let you know. I think everything will go as planned because 3 other people have bought from the seller in the meantime so they can verify it is legit. I am hoping it all works out though.

its not about the stock....but rather how ridiculously low the price is...
i mean, apple sold it for $2800 on the store. to get it for $1000 less? its a bit fishy?

rMBP can go for a steal on eBay if you find them at the right time. I saw a brand new 2.8GHz 768GB 16GB go for $2,200

For students buying a computer this thread is irrelevant. Simply save $30.00 of the $100.00 given to you for the back to school program.

an expensive box of rocks

Did you happen to get a tracking number from the seller? Very convenient that the seller had a shipping delay. I don't see how Paypal is going to protect you when you violated the rules and went outside of eBay to make the purchase.
There is no way this is legit. Apple sells this model for $2800 and there hasn't been a completed sale on eBay in the last 90 days for less than $2300 for this model. There is no way this seller is getting them that cheaply in order to make any kind of profit, even at $1900. They would have to be buying them for $1775 just to break even at $1900 and I know there is not that much markup on these things. When BestBuy sells an open-box Macbook at 10% off, they are taking a loss.
If the OP ends up getting scammed, guaranteed they are not coming back online to let us know how big a fool they were.

Thing is, he got it for $1700, not even $1900.

Even less of a chance that this is legit.
No one who isn't certifiable would sell a brand new $2800 laptop for $1700.
The eBay/Paypal fees are $105, so that's a net of $1595 without even making anything on the sale.

It doesn't matter if the seller is making profit or not on the machine. At least not to PayPal. It is not the responsibility of the buyer to ensure a seller makes profit in a transaction. So if for some reason the deal falls through, he will still be protected with PayPal, and even more so with his credit card.

PayPal is not just limited to eBay. It's a global payment processor that many online stores use, and it offers the same protection to those buyers as well.

Good luck with the deal, OP. If it is fake, you'll get your money back. It'll just be a hassle.

Edit: By the way, the answer to your question is no. Come on man, you're saving over $1000 off retail and you're worrying about a $20-$30 software update?

I agree. Also, to everyone explicitly stating that the OP will get their money back from Paypal if things go south, maybe you should actually read the user agreement. I am wishing you the best of luck though, OP.

Purchase Protection does not cover certain kinds of purchases. These include: digital goods (intangible items), services, real estate, motorized vehicles (of any kind), custom made items, travel tickets, industrial machinery (for manufacturing), prepaid cards, or items that violate our policies or eBay’s policies (stuff that’s usually prohibited by law anyway). Purchase Protection also does not cover items that you purchase in person, or money you send to friends and family.

You can't offer to buy items you found on eBay without using eBay.

Items bought outside of eBay aren't covered by our policies, and you aren't protected against fraud. Sellers have to follow the same rule, and if a seller offers to sell you something outside of eBay, don't accept the offer. For more information, see our rules for everyone.

As long as he put in the description of what he was buying in the notes of the paypal transaction, he has some purchase protection. Paypal's protection, IIRC, isn't as good/quick as ebay's but it's there.

The first link is saying you can't buy anything with paypal that is illegal to sell, a macbook is not illegal to sell to someone.

The second link is from ebay saying that you are not protected by ebay's buyer protection if you buy something not through ebay (well yea, duh lol). It doesn't say that if you find the item on ebay and buy it through another source, that you have 0 coverage whatsoever, just that you have no coverage through ebay.

Look at the seller's history too, the user is Jasorich. He/she has sold a couple of these rMBP on ebay for anywhere from 1900-2200 and they all have positive reviews.

I hope you are right for the OP's sake but looking at the seller's(Jasorich) ebay history I get the feeling it has been highjacked and those reviews are also from highjacked accounts. it is out of the seller's character to be selling these electronic items from the past i.e when you have a history in your ebay ratings for selling postage stamps and other items under $10 and then suddenly you are selling high end electronics cheaply??? I hope I am wrong for the OP's sake but my gut feeling tells me it is a scam. :(

I bought a Retina MacBook Pro from the seller Jasorich. Brand new $1900. I was skeptical to at the beginning but I got it and have had it for almost a month now. No problems at all and the 1 year warranty wasn't even registered yet so it is good until next June. This seller seems to sell a lot of them too.

My guess. Don't take it personal ;)

* For those who don't buy hardware, mavericks would cost $29.99
* For those who buy current models they will have $10 discount, i.e. $19.99
* For those who buy haswell models, mavericks would be free :D

There's no evidence at all that these could be prices. Why would Apple charge $20 for non-current models purchased after the announcement but offer Haswell for free upgrade. Makes no sense - it would just piss customers off

Thanks for all the best wishes and replies. This is what I figure and what has happened so far.

#1 I bought through the seller directly, no ebay, just talking on the phone and paypal. So there's no way it violates ebays policy's people sell stuff directly through paypal all the time.
#2 Bought with credit card that does have protection. I won't get Ebay protection but I do get paypals and the credit cards.
#3 The seller has good feedback and has legitimately sold many of them.
#4 The shipping was delayed due to my circumstances. I was away when it would have been shipped, and told the seller to hold off on shipping it until I was home to safely receive the package. Not about to let a rMBP sit on my porch for 2 days.
#5 I have been in constant contact over the phone with the sellers personal cell. The contact info is legit and if something were to go wrong I have a good amount of information.
#6 The deal...more than worth trying to see if I can snag it for 1700$.
#7 I will know what exactly is going on/ what will happen in 24 hours ;)

I'm trusting all will go well and I hope it does. But if it doesnt, yes I screwed up and got scammed, but will I fight to get every dime back and that seller reported to paypal and ebay. Not to mention I work for an agency I will not name, but let's just say they provide a legal way to handle thieves and or scammers. Like I said I hope it just works out for the best and ya know a deal is a deal, but then again ***** happens and you have to handle it.

Certainly not. One, the release is still some way off and they only start doing doing that on or just before the release. Two, you bought it from eBay...you're lucky you'll still get a warranty thanks to the way Apple do warranties.

More than 15 days passed since your first post. What happened? Did you receive your rMBP or not? I hope you are doing well and have not been scammed...

If you are really Mr. Chance, then be aware $1700 for a 15" rMBP core i7, 2.7 ghz, 512gb SSD, 16gb RAM, 2013 model is likely something that fell off the back of a lorry... :D . I hope Apple doesn't blacklist your rMBP so you can buy and install Mavericks... ;)

Hi bbishop93, those 24hrs already passed, did you got your machine?

That same seller was recently discussed in the refurb sticky and it looks like that user got the MBP as ordered. Hopefully it worked out the same for this one.

For OP's sake I hope so but this is one hell of a deal. I wonder how any seller is able to offer high end machines this cheap? The fact that OP hasn't updated doesn't bode well.
