I got suckered into the Apple upgrade dilemma:

2TB SSD storage +$400 USD
4TB SSD storage +$600 USD when you select the 2TB option

I survived with 1TB for over 9 years now. 4K files take up way too much storage and Pro Applications are heavy as well. 4TB it is but 8TB is very tempting.

Question, does anyone know if these new chips will require apps from Adobe, Maxon, etc. to update all of their software across the board? Technically, these aren't new chips just update M1 chips so I think I may have just answered my own question. LAST THING. Thank you APPLE for keeping the AUX port.

Am I the only one that actually thinks this is completely reasonable, especially given that this thing is about as fast as a 12-core Mac Pro but has double the RAM, a much faster GPU, 32X larger SSD, and essentially a smaller Pro Display XDR while only weighing a few pounds and costs $900 less? Stop complaining and rejoice! THIS IS THE UPGRADE FOR THE AGES.

I would upgrade if my MBP were older but it's not so I won't. I'll keep telling myself that I won't so that I won't but every hour that goes by I'm getting all twitchy about it and keep looking at different configurations and how much I can sell my 2019 16" for and honestly I could also sell my 2019 5K nearly maxed out iMac too because this thing is so fast but I want a good but reasonably priced Apple external display as well so I'll wait.

It will be interesting to see what comes next. My money is on a 30-32" iMac Pro. I think the Mac Pro is still a ways off. But given all the speed benefits of integrating the GPU into the CPU, how will you ever be able to upgrade the Mac Pro? Will Apple sell a version of their SoC with pins so you can swap it out? Or are we just going to go back to the trashcan now that it works thermally?

Except it's not as fast as a 12-core Mac Pro just as the M1 Air isn't as fast as my 8-core iMac Pro. In fact it's significantly slower in my workloads - container based software development, Ableton Live etc.

Pricing isn’t so bad if you consider what you get for it, we’re talking of possibly one of the fastest laptop available anywhere if Apple graphs will prove to be true. Also let’s acknowledge for that price you get a mad 8TB of storage and 64GB of RAM. This trend of pumping out all the specs in a Mac to present an uncomfortably high price is quite silly in my opinion and is only good for headlines and fuelling the various hate trains.

Freaking hell, 8TB of storage on a laptop.

It's funny, SSDs are a lot more expensive per GB than spinning rust, but the fact that it's just chips means it takes up very little space, so SSDs have made it possible to cram absurd amounts of storage into portable devices.

Living in the future is neat sometimes! :)
8TB was already available on the previous model (as I have it =). I only use just over 4TB, alas there is no 5TB, 6TB or 7TB option. And could certainly do things to get just under 4TB but then I'm constantly having to worry about file space, like in the old days. Most of the space is images. Use lightroom classic. Ideally would be using Lightroom Cloud to help with that greatly, but still missing too many features and with that route , I cant backup my images and have to completely trust Adobe not to lose them. And can use external drives, but slower, and have to of course carry and extra drive. So for me the extra cost is well worth it.

I assumed the laptops would increase in price but the last model I have is close to 6, where is this new one is so much dramatically better in every way, glad to see them keep the prices roughly the same.

What's the ROI on your Netflix subscription?
That is only a smart question if I was being paid to watch Netflix, as I was talking about the ROI on a professional laptop being used by a professional being paid to use it and that the cost was not that high for paid work. And was responding to a comment where they said "If we only made purchases based on ROI a lot of businesses would go under."

OVERPRICED POC ! SHAME ON APPLE FOR USING THEIR M1 AND MAKING THEIR JUNK AS HIGH AS INTEL.. AND WE ALL THOUGHT M1/M1X SHOULD BE CHEAPER THAN INTEL. NO ONE IS GOING TO SPEND 6000 FOR A LAPTOP. NO THANK YOU, I WILL STICK WITH MY 2015, FOR NOW.

Nevermind. Actually better pricing than before I think?

Price is quite good. People quote the max spec like people are actually going to buy it. You don’t need an 8TB HDD for Pete’s sake, there’s expandable storage via thunderbolt and sd slot. If you are a pro you use external usb drives anyways. Pricing increased very marginally compared to inflation and the amount of things they added. People don’t understand the cost of a 16” mini led screen perhaps. Your phone with oled costs a grand. And you’re getting a full laptop with a nicer screen and a faster cpu so I was actually impressed they barely raised pricing.

Anyone knows whether Apple will include the M1 Pro/Max MBP on the Employee Purchase Program (EPP) list? It typically saves 5%-6%, enough to cover most state taxes?

In Illinois, with state taxes, it totals to $6,480. Assuming the MBP lasts 5.5 years, daily cost is $3.25, cheaper than a Starbucks Caffee Latte ($3.36). Yes, the jump from 4TB to 8TB ($300/TB) is a huge premium, but what's the cost of lugging an external 4TB SSD, plugging in and out every day?

Always interesting to look at these old threads with today’s eyes. I’m waiting for my MBP 3 Max one step from fully loaded. 128 GB/4 TB. Amazing to think that only a few months back the M2 chip was the big bopper. It all evolves so quickly which is exactly why I spent the big bucks. Future proof for a time at least.

A fully maxed 16-inch MacBook Pro tops out at $6,099, featuring a top of the line M1 Max chip with 10-core CPU and 32-core GPU, 64GB unified memory, and 8TB SSD.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro models can be customized with the same specs. A 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, 64GB unified memory, and 8TB SSD is priced at $5,899.

Btw, here in Feb 2025, i just picked up a like new 2021 Macbook Pro 14" M1 Max with the 64GB ram and 4TB SSD for $1300. can't believe this thing was around $5000. almost bought a M4 pro w/nano texture screen but the wait for it to arrive and total cost ($2400 w/24gb ram, 1tb ssd) felt like overkill for my needs and budget. instead got a new maxed out ipad mini w/cellular and my m1 max.

i def plan to do this same thing in five years w/an m4 max. for those looking to go from an intel era macbook to m series, the m1/m2 max series seem to really hold up well esp the max'd out configs. they don't get the premium like one would think (or so the market seems to show atm on ebay)
