And be just as expensive like they were and are on the MBA. I guess you missed that part.

Wow, way to take my head off. I was thinking more down the line when SSD in general gets cheaper. Yeah the MBA upgrade drives are expensive right now. But all SSD drives kind of are. Also let's not forget that most peopl who upgrade the rMBP SSD will most likely sell the old drives on ebay to get back some of the costs. This is good for us who want to buy the bigger drives and good for the seller who can get some of the investment back.

Nope, I have my recycle bin disabled... Delete something, and its gone forever. Not everyone needs their hand held, which is why I doubt you can even disable the trash bin on OS X.

I was talking about the trash bin next to your desk...

If he is like me the 512 gb option was just to expensive. I am holding out for OWC or someone else to release upgrades. Which I am sure will happen with time just like the MBA :)

have you looked at prices of the upgrades for flash drives for the older Macbook Airs that OWC already made? getting a 512gb from them will likely cost more than if you had just gotten the upgraded machine from Apple.

So you freed up 1GB of space (that about $1 for a 1GB SD card if you can find one that small these days) and you lost your recovery partition, which is a VERY valuable thing to have if you need to do any disk recovery, or use Find My Mac. Not the best choice.

See my post above. I was talking more down the road. All SSD drives are expensive right now. I payed almost 100 bucks for an IDE ssd for my old g4 powerbook. Prices will come down. In the mean time I have a 750gb hybrid hdd (8gb ssd cache seagate momentus 7200rpm) that is very fast that I keep in a usb 3.0 enclosure. Works great for now till SSD prices come down.

if you think thats getting your head taken off, then you live a very sheltered life.

as far as selling the old ssd, who would they be selling to? other rMBP owners? as far as i know, the rMBP ssd has a special input, even different from the airs.

I am fully aware of where to look for remnants of apps just cleanmymac makes it easier and if it picks up anything to delete which I know shouldn't be then I just make sure it's not ticked.

Had mac's for a good 10 years so and just a neat freak for making sure all remnants are gone (forced habit from windows)

If you're being a neat freak, you'd stay far away from CleanMyMac. It's the worst of all of those programs, and not only doesn't delete hardly anything important associated with apps, but has been known to cause problems (and you can't always count on catching its mistakes).

My 256gb macbook pro retina unit arrived today.
And later:
Not concerned about space, but why not get the maximum you can?
256 GB is not the maximum.

Try stripping out unwanted language support with the free app Monolingual. It'll give you several gigs.
Does not work for code signed apps (Mac App Store & other sources).

App Zapper is my favorite way to delete unwanted apps. It clears everything associated with it.

Actually I am in the military, so far from a sheltered life there bud. I was pointing to the fact that you jump to the conclusion that I have done zero research and you wanted to make a quick insult like an ass.

And yes, that is exactly who I was talking about selling the ssd to. People who can afford to upgrade the SSD down the road will. That will mean that me with my 256gb ssd will have the chance of buying a used 512 ssd used out of another rmbp. Or even units that get parted out bc they are broken and too expensive to repair will lead to ssd drives being put on ebay. I love how some people assume that ssd is just going to stay sooo expensive for an eternity. I am simply thinking outside the box. Something some people seem to not have any ability to do. So just sit over there and be negative hwile others try to look at the bright side down the road. Thanks for playing.

Also there is always a chance other companies will design drives as prices go down. I am not saying that OWC will be th eonly company to even think twice about making an ssd.

Oh yay the answer to all my problems. If I just buy a regular macbook I can have something other than the computer I really want and STILL pay the same prices for a 512 ssd. 512 ssd drives are expensive. It is not just the rmbp that has this issue. I don't see how bying a different computer is going to solve the high ssd cost problem. I built a normal macbook pro and configured similar to the rmbp it was just as expensive. Don't think I am hating on the rmbp. Bc I am not. If I was a hater I would not spend 4 weeks waiting on it to be delivered.

+1 great app

Another +1 for Monolingual. If you never use any language besides English in your Mac, as many of us don't, it saves a lot of space.

SSD drives are already dramatically decreasing in price! A year ago I bought my Samsung 430 256GB SSD for $500....now you can get a 512GB SSD for about $600. So prices are dropping. The only problem is, the rMBP uses a logic board based SSD....they are harder to come by and there is basically only one source for them, and they charge an arm and a leg for them. Yes, parted rMBP will start appearing on ebay in 3 or 4 years....but by then its time to upgrade the entire unit anyway. I think we are about to be over the times of user replaceable parts...and if apple can get away with it, you can be sure that everyone else will follow suit! The advantage tho, is prices start shifting down considerably! Also, when computers are considered appliances with non-replaceable parts we will start seeing a bit more consistency in performance I think. Sure there will be crap computers still sold for $200...but on the higher end, if a computer needs to last a few years, they will start building in parts that are more future resistant...like the rMBP.

And to those complaining about the price tag...remember. These used to be twice as much and 1/3 as powerful!

No, it doesn't. Read post #22 and the links.

Just to through it out there, it's not for everybody... but if you don't car about OS X 'safe sleep' feature' you can disable it and remove it. By doing this you regain hard drive space equal to your RAM... in my case i got 16gb back of my 256gb SSD ;).

Safe Sleep is a function that writes the contents of your RAM to the HD when the computer goes to sleep. This saves the memory in case power is lost (RAM is 'volatile' and needs power or the memory will be lost). If you save your files and don't let your mac battery die while you have unsaved data then you have nothing to worry about though... and as a side benefit your mac will go to sleep/wake up much faster.

In terminal you type in the following commands

To remove the sleep image file: sudo rm -rf /var/vm/sleepimage

To disable safe sleep mode: sudo pmset hibernate mode 0

If you want to learn more about it read this write-up
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/08/22/why-hibernate-or-safe-sleep-mode-is-no-longer-necessary-in-os/

FYI I did this on my 2010 pro and it was fine for 2+ years.

even if you are in the military and act like that to a benign comment and then mine, it seems like you need a little toughing up. dont be so sensitive.

also, who would want to buy a 256 used rmpb ssd drive other than the very few who had theirs fail? going to be a very small market for those.

as to your other point about ssds becoming less expensive, i dont really care. Because, OBVIOUSLY. "thanks for playing"

I am not being sensitive. I am talking about how everyone on this forums trys to be so damn negative. I have never seen any forum like it in my life.

I was not talking really about selling used 256gb drives. I was talking about people selling 512gb plus ones because they have upgraded. I would have though that was pretty obvious.

If you don't care about SSD becoming less expensive you must be able to afford the high prices. So why are you even in this thread if that is the case?

I wish Apple to have 512Gb/16Gb version as a cheapest base model at 3000$. That would so much decrease waiting period for these machines :D

For OP, go order Nifty MiniDrive if you're in a search for more storage.

We will just agree to disagree. No point continuing our argument when I don't think eithe rof us is exactly sur ewhat the other is trying to say. Maybe we just had misunderstanding somehwere. No hard feelings.

I've got a 100gb partition for Windows so I really need to maximize space but don't want to get rid of recovery. In my experience with slimming applications, they can do more harm than good (same with Windows driver cleaning and registry cleaning stuff). So I think I'll keep it how it is.

I've googled for some info and didn't fine much. Interested in things like a shared Steam folder that both Lion and and Windows can use. I know I can probably do this via symbolic links. Looks like I'll have to use third party apps if I want to write to NTFS from Lion and vice versa to HFS+. A symbolic link to an external drive that's FAT32 or whatever obviously would be a better route to go and provide unlimited space. It's just for load times purposes, some games I prefer on the SSD. Skyrim's loading jutter from walking into new areas is minimized significantly on the SSD.

To the OP, my guess is, if you're even asking, you should use Time Machine. CCC has many useful features for power, or more tech-saavy users, but Time Machine does a great job as well. Just backup everything to Time Machine, get the new machine, fire up Migration Assistant and plug in your TM backup. You won't even notice it is a different machine. Everything goes to the way it was. No hassle.
