Call me confused but how does one OS favor over another simply because of their browsers? Integrated browsers aren't ever all they're cracked up to be. Safari 2x was great, not so sure on 3x myself but I'm not switching to Windows on account of it!

you are not confused...

I think there is underlying cultural issue with people who are new to mac, and how they deploy crisis-management, I believe that the PC folk have been experiencing frustration for the longest time and have become intolerable to any hair that lands on their soup (I love metaphors) if you have been a mac user for a long time you can be assured that a lot of fixes have been posted by regular users that have tried out solutions or are very adept in dealing with disasters. I think since we are a smaller community information on issues travels faster and that OS X's unix guts are more stable therefore more liable to fixing on a user level. Generally speaking we as regular users fail to implement specific methodologies to upgrading or are very aloof when it comes to OS maintenance and therefore feel outraged when something goes awry (even worse in the PC world) What is not known specially to switchers to mac is that at some point there's a fix or a hack that they themselves can do that would solve the problem without taking your box to Compusa, So if users switch just based on a browser it usually denotes a deeper negative experience with what ever system they have had and it shows a certain naivete, lack of experience and patience and all it takes is to read some of the posts or await for an update. The unrealized expectation that Apple will provide an immediate fix to what ails your system at this very moment is child-like, no company unless it puts your life in danger addresses issues in that manner, for those that say that Apple is not listening are misunderstanding on how Apple utilizes its resources or over-identify with the product itself.

You should drink less coffee and more eggnog. Vista?? Have fun with that.

Seriously, Safari runs great on my MacPro. When I go to sites that manage to crash it, I just switch to one of the many other browsers that are available. Or I just avoid those websites. Let me guess, Safari is crashing when you go to myspace.com?

Safari 3 is problematic with the Webkit version that it comes with. Try the latest nightly build off www.webkit.org. Here's a direct link for the lazy:

http://nightly.webkit.org/files/trunk/mac/WebKit-SVN-r28949.dmg

I use the latest nightly builds of Webkit as my primary browser. Stupid, I know, since they are "test" builds really... but they run 10x better than the regular Safari does on Leopard for me. Far less crashing, no crazy 800mb+ of physical memory usage after 30 mins, etc.

Sorry you're having trouble, but I can't imagine why. I use Firefox 2.0 on my Mac Pro and Safari 3 on my MacBook Pro. Neither has caused me any trouble at all.

instead of considering a os switch I'd try out different browsers...

I for myself use safari, firefox and camino on a regular basis...
for camino and safari you might want to check out these sites

pimpmycamino.com

and

pimpmysafari.com

Don't know what your problem is with Safari. Mine never quits, I have no problems with any websites, or certificates, etc.

Some people have had problems lately with Safari quiting, but with the new security update of last week understand that their issues are now gone.

Safari, for me, works very fast on Leopard.

Actually, I am on Vista and since the update ( as of tonight) Safari 3 won't even start - it says it "quit" before it even loads.....

And no i can't help but to be on Vista - I am gonna buy a new mac after the beginning of the year :)

I've been using Safari almost exclusively for over 4 months (I used Camino and Firefox prior to that). The only stability issue that I had with any of them was when running Safari 3 beta on Tiger, I would experience frequent hangs. However, Safari 3 on Leopard is rock solid, it's easily the fastest browser, having awesome javascript performance. This is the main reason I use Safari over the other browsers.

My wife uses IE on Vista (on a laptop that's less that a month old, and no 3rd party software installed), and she frequently experiences hangs on heavily javascripted pages. Spinning blue circles are frequent and from time to time, Vista will shut itself down. I don't have any of those problems on my Macbook.

If it is crashing there is obviously a problem. Maybe with your router, DSL modem or whatever.

Why don't you try fixing that instead of bitching about how crap Safari is?

Safari 3 works a treat for me.

Have you installed the latest security update v1.1 Safari was crashing loads before I installed that.

No probelms here on a Mac Pro.

The main thing that bugged me in Safari 2 was the lack of feedback in the page search. Not anymore. I'm insanely in love with the "dim the lights" page search feature in Safari :)

I personally tend to have both Safari and Camino running simultaneously on my Leopard system, and I tend to run different kinds of sites in each as I find each browser has its merits with certain content. However I keep Safari as the default browser because its smaller and faster than pretty much any other browser you can mention, especially on OSX. The only issue I have with Safari is its increasing memory usage, which appears to have improved somewhat with the latest WebKit releases. Other than that I find it a good, fast browser for everyday use.

As for Windows... I cant think of any reason I'd ever go back to it. I do however keep a Windows XP desktop running under VMware with Leopard's Spaces, which I use for certain specialist apps that only run under Windows and for Winamp (with my hundreds of plugins running) which I will always remain a fan of. But having said that 99% of what I do on my system is OSX-based and I wouldnt have it any other way, I love my Mac more than any other computer Ive ever owned in 20 years of computing.

I hate to say it but the issue may lie with Safari and the 2wire wireless router. That's what I have and my wife's MacBook running Leopard seems to forget the connection even though it says it's still connected from time to time.

Weird thing is that on my PB running Leopard, Safari 3 is definitely rock solid, better than Safari 2 ever was.

I've been using nothing but Safari (and a bit of Firefox...less than 2% of the time) and have had no trouble with it whatsoever - It's been fast, smooth and nicely integrated with the OS. I would say you got a lemon - if that's possible with something like this. Try downloading it fresh and installing again?

If you're having trouble with Safari, then try Firefox. Vista is a very trouble-prone operating system... don't switch to Windows just because an app doesn't work. You're using a Mac - don't voluntarily go back to the Hell of Windows.

Overall Safari is not bad, and I believe it will become stable enough soon, I have been reading posts not just from Macrumors but also from the Apple support forums as well and there's been a lot of input on them, Im glad some have found solutions to complex problems with not just Safari but with Leopard overall. There are several components that have marring the new cat: 1)The connectivity issue both wired and wireless, 2)the firewall glitches, 3)sleep issues including awaking and putting to sleep, 4) update crashes, 5) unresponsive apps. 6) The inability of System Prefs app. to retain settings and the Disc App to actually repair permissions and not just modify them etc, 7) Corruption of keychains and old caches that affect system performance. Some issues are tied together specially the connectivity one is tied in with the firewall and it comes down to simple configurations fixes that really make a difference.
Pretty much hit the nail on the head

I was incredibly happy with Safari on Tiger but having gone to Leopard, I am blown away by the utter lack of stability on Safari.

I am still very happy with Safari/Leopard but just shocked at how unstable it became with the upgrade.

I suspect the next 1-2 updates will fix it though

Safari 3 -- I'm loving it. It is a lot faster than earlier version and it never crashes like before. Firefox and Camino very good, but I still prefer Safari. At first I didn't see any functionality improvements, but then I discovered all the "hidden" new capabilities and am very impressed and am having a great time. Happy man here.

question safari

Rather than open a new thread, I thought maybe I should add it to this existing one. Scuse me if this is wrong : )

I'm a new Safari user... I use Linux actually, but downloaded Safari-for-'blows on the work machine because I build websites and looking at them in Konqueror isn't enough if I can see what a real Mac user sees. Safari does have a small number of specific bugs or quirks that I like to see first so I can address them : )

Question: (and I looked on the apple site under support but wtf? nothing about this!) I'm used to seeing URL's on the bottom of all my browsers when I hover over a link. Safari doesn't have a bottom bar. Is there some other place this goes? I don't mean title text; I've already found the weirdness with title text on another part of the browser window : ) What do you guys do to see where I link will take you before you click it? Or does Safari just not do this?

And what the heck-- is there a Safari-explanations-page somewhere that explains Safari-specific features for new users (with or without Macs)? I found one, but I must download Quicktime to view > : / Something for people who normally use FF or Opera?
