The 11" perhaps didn't have the ROI to make it worthwhile but we'll never know.

Could be the case.
Thing has/had some longevity in terms of both life and popularity, though, hasn't it?
I know we probably see a disproportionate number of fans on this particular forum, but was in the commons or food court area of the student union at Indiana State the other day and saw some kids using the Air, including at least one 11-inch.
For a computer the experts have been predicting dead for quite a while, it seems to be a busy little zombie.
Maybe the folks at Apple at some point said something to the effect of, "We've got to stop making such long-lasting, popular units, or we'll never up-sell these people!"
I was working for a small news service when I first used an MBA, an 11-inch company issue. First thought was, "This is my main/only computer?" After a year, I was thinking, "This is probably the perfect computer for a writer on the road."

These deals on Airs are fairly common, sign up for best buy email alerts.

Not sure if this is a sign of a pending replacement. I wouldn't hold my breath.

I bought my 2014 and 2015 MBA's for around that price back in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Best Buy has had some great sales.

Literally saw the post on here, drove there after work and said I would think about it then literally came back the next day and price was back up....

If another sale pops up let us know

While not the $699 from Best Buy's one day sale, they just put the 2017 Macbook Air back on sale (April 25 2018) for $749 (i5 / 128 GB), $949 (i5 / 256 GB) and $1299 (i7 / 512 GB).

That's $250 off list for all models (vs. $300 off from the previous sale). Still an awesome deal, especially if you're like me and missed the last deal - but have been checking the price every day since!

Yes, only a $50 difference.
Will go and check it out! Thank you.

Would appreciate any input you have - we're looking to replace a 2009 MacBook Pro and considering one of these MBAs that are on sale at Best Buy today. We don't use the laptop for anything too complicated - finances, MS Office, iPhoto, web browsing. We'd like to buy a product that will last as many years as possible before we are unable to do updates (which is where we're at with the '09 MBP). Do you guys think the MBA i5/128 GB would fit this bill?

Sure, why not. I replaced my 2008 MBP with a MBA in 2011 and it was a huge improvement. The new ones are much better. But I would not be satisfied with a 128gb SSD. If I wanted to keep the machine for 9 years (like your MBP) then I would get the 512gb SSD. But that's me, you have to decide what your own needs are.

My only other thought is, since you're worried about obsolescence, it's generally expected that the MBA will be either discontinued or replaced this year. If so, then you should only expect 6 years until Apple will no longer service it. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201624

Vintage products are those that have not been manufactured for more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. Apple has discontinued hardware service for vintage products with the following exceptions:

  • Mac products purchased in the country of Turkey. Owners of vintage Mac products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers within the country of Turkey.
  • Products purchased in the state of California, United States, as required by statute.

Myself I see 128gb as enough store at least for what I do. Usually you expect to replace a laptop between 5 and 10 years.

Thanks.
Yeah I was thinking of going with the Air 128gb i5.

I do basic internet usage and will be using some photo shop and possible word documents. This should be effective for thag correct?

By the way when was the latest mac air released/refreshed?

Thanks.

Yes, it'll be effective for that... and so much more. My 2014 4GB/128GB 11" MBA does all of that and more. I think that the 13"MBA received a small processor upgrade in 2017.

Was just at Best Buy and they were selling me hard on the 128 GB Air.

I do most of daily work in Google Docs and sheets. I’m looking for a laptop with a great keyboard and battery life, and right now it looks like the only real option is the Air. I have an external display for at home so the screen resolution is not a huge deal. The only thing holding me back are the rumors of something new coming out in June. It’s really hard to pass up on this deal though. I know I’m going to be buying a computer that fits my needs, I’m wondering how much better it’s replacement could be.

Be weird to have 128gb of space on the computer and 256 on the phone lol.
Bill gates, 640mb, etc.

Don't miss out or you'll kick yourself when you see the next MBA specs.

Yes I went and checked out the MBA air and I seen it next to the Macbook and that screen resolution is a big noticable difference.

In India the MBA is routinely available for USD 800-900. During the cheapest sales, it has even come down to like USD 650-700 or so.

I’m looking for a laptop with a great keyboard ...
The next MBA is likely to change the keyboard so if you like the current one I would go for it. The resale value on eBay is still pretty good for used Macs so even if you fall in love with a new one in June you won't be out that much money.

I ended up buying one for this reason. I'm just too worried that the next version of the Air/Macbook is going to be a 13 inch retina Macbook with similar butterfly switches to what's in the rest of their line right now. After thinking about it for a couple of hours I realized that things I value most in a laptop are having a great keyboard and enough battery life to easily make it through a days work without having to plug in.

I still hope they have something cool to announce in June, but I feel like for this price I made the right decision.

On top of that you have the magsafe and the abundance of charging ports.
