Anand has speculated that he thinks there is a problem with the drive ribbon/connector. Some people are seeing 6 gbps and others 3 on the same model.

Maybe I missed a post, but I have not seen anybody with a 2011 MBP that was unable to get a 6 gbps connection with this SSD. I have seen posts where the damn thing would not work at all, but for those that got it working I think they all were able to get a SATA III connection.

Anand commented again on the cable issue in the comments of his recent Vertex 3 review and he seemed unsure if this really is the issue.

It does seem like forum posts about new SATA III SSD problems with the 2011 MBPs dropped off with the EFI update a few days ago, regardless of SSD brand, so maybe the EFI update fixed the problem.

I saw a couple posts from Crucial M4 users who had problems that went away with the EFI update. I have not seen posts either way on the Intel 510 since the EFI update. I think maybe with the Intel 510 being one of the first available new SATA III drives around the same time the 2011 MBPs came out, people that had trouble already just sent the SSD back and went to another brand? It would be interesting to hear from users with Intel 510 who had problems and if the EFI update helped.

I would be interested in reports by such users as well. I've got my 120GB 510 series today but my MBP is still on its way. I had to decide between the 320 and the 510 series. I went for the 510 because I thought when there are SATA3 problems I could still install it in the ODD bay and use it with SATA2.

Would I have disadvantages to operate the SSD in the ODD bay? I've read reports about hibernation problems and stuff like that when the boot drive is not installed in the hd bay.......

The optical bay SATA connection is a SATA II speed connection so you would not realize the max speed of your new SATA III SSD. I too have skimmed some of the threads on issues with the "main" drive in the optical bay, but since I am not using that setup have not really paid much attention to the issue.
