Dear all,

a quick forum search did not yield any other results, so please bare with me:

I just recently bought an MBP 14" 2021. When first playing around the first days I noticed quite a short battery life that I was getting.
I did a little research and tweaked some settings:
- Siri is deactivated
- iCloud is deactivated
- battery saver is on
- there are no apps in the background other than spotify and raycast

I also noticed that the mbp keeps draining even when in sleepmode and closed. The following screen shots how ridiculously bad it is (compare versus screen on time).

any ideas?

thanks in advance!

edit:
ok I had a look in activity monitor and it seems that google chrome was contributing quite a bit to that specific drain. I don't know why tho, the MacBook pro was sleeping and closed. i turned off the "allow in background" toggle for chrome....

Just a thought - have you updated chrome to the latest version ( i assume you did). Perhaps shut down laptop and see if the issue creeps up again without opening Chrome for 30 mins or so with lid closed. I do not use chrome and mostly on safari and firefox. I know there was battery drain bug in chrome that might be fixed. See article perhaps.

Thanks for your reply! I already was on the latest chrome version. it still persists anyways. what exactly does sleep mode do if not put everything to sleep?

sounds like the os is still indexing, this happened to me when i first got my mac, how long does it index depends on how much files you have, if the issue still persist in the next couple of days i would take it to the apple store and get it checked. for comparison i avg 8-9 hours under normal use and 10-12 if im being conservative.

Any USB devices plugged into this laptop? They can often prevent the laptop from entering deep sleep.

It might be useful to experiment using Safari (with AdGuard) instead of Chrome for a few days if it is possible for you. I expect you will see a nice improvement. Also I assume you mean Low Power Mode when you say battery saver, which is great, but I also manually shut off the wifi before sleep (at least at night if not several time over the day, whenever I don't actively use the internet). I keep the Bluetooth antenna off at all times.

Having said all that, your picture still looks alarming, and it is still possible you got a lemon battery.
Do you use your screen at full brightness?
Do you have the M1 pro or max? If pro, I would expect at least 8 hours with the low power settings and using the screen at ~50% brightness.

thanks everybody for the input.

- no USB devices are attached
- Bluetooth off
- I doubt its down to indexing, as there are no files on the disk, other than a few apps. no fotos, no files, no videos
- I keep the low power mode on. hence the display is lowered anyways.

until now I only do webbrowsing emails and spotify - that's it. its really mind boggling how the m1 pro, with no hard computing at all, is really performing disappointing.
any tools to check the battery?

I also had the same issue. I purchased a Refurbished from Apple.com The laptop had 2 battery cycle counts. I also noticed a fast drain while using it also as well when lid was closed sleeping. I thought the OSX was indexing but after 1.5 weeks still draining. I have a MBA M1 and MBA M2 .. Those last forever. I also have a 12" Macbook with 40 battery cycles that too last forever.
After weighing out my options and had a few other issues with the MBP 2021 14" I decided to return it.

I didnt love the all black keyboard, the Track pad click felt like a tinny click compared to the Airs. and the battery life was terrible. I only purchased the 14" for the screen. I would never need the M2 Pro chip. I think that was the battery hog with the Mini LED display.

Using the M1 Air and couldn't be happier.

Hope you sort your issue out.

is there any tool that can give me better insights in SoT vs battery usage?
