When I try to connect my iPhone 13 pro max to my MBP 14, the MBP displays a message that reads iPhone not compatible.

I assume you mean a USB connection.

You can connect any iPhone with any MacBook through USB.
There is a safety measure that you need to confirm the USB connection on your iPhone, maybe that is the case here?
