It's been interesting reading these comments. As one who has worked on pc's and Macs both for a while, when you immediately switch back and forth, Windows does have a "thinner" look to the fonts for sure due to the differences in the way the two alias fonts. However, I an say that, for whatever reason, the Mac honestly to me looks much better and is easier on the eyes. I guess it's all a matter of preference though. I'm surprised to see so many say they prefer Window's truetype...

I think Mac font rendering is supposed to look more like printed text. In my opinion it does this well. PC font rendering reminds me of old school computers (i.e. all pixelated).

Just got my first ever Mac and also noticed Fuzzy Text..!

After years of wanting a Mac and having spent my entire life using Windows I finally ordered the new MacBook Pro a week ago and it was delivered just 2 days ago. The first thing I noticed is how blurry/fuzzy the text is and I also wondered if I had a faulty LED panel or something so I have booked to go to my local Apple store tomorrow (Scottsdale!) to compare mine to their display units....however now I have read some of these comments I realize that this is 'normal' and I do not have a faulty unit.

I have a 15" Dell XPS 1530 notebook running Vista that I use every day (and cost half of what my new MacBook cost!) and it renders text crisply so I had never even thought about the fact that a near top spec MacBook Pro would be so different. To be honest I was expecting to be 'blown away' by the sheer quality of all aspects of the machine...hardware, design, OS etc and I must say that I am - apart from the text rendering!

I am a total Mac newbie so I am still finding my way around the OS but thanks for the suggestions about changing the font smoothing etc -- I will experiment a little to see if I can 'improve' the quality.

I don't know why, but my 13.3" MBP seemed really blurry and it was hard for me to focus. This may have been due to the glass overlay. I also got an older 15" MBP with a matte display recently... and oh my gosh do I like it much, much more.

see if the key combo command option \ does anything for you.

it toggles between softening things and sharpening things.

edit: for me it only makes a difference when i'm zoomed in close to something (i.e. using control + two finger swipe upwards to look at something closely)

This is the #1 issue holding me back from buying a MBP. Seriously.

To my eyes, text on Windows using ClearType is much sharper than the same text on a Mac. The Mac fonts, to me, look blurry or fuzzy in comparison.

I went to see the new MBPs the other day, hoping that this may have changed... but no go. :(

Here are just a few other threads about it:

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that I did try adjusting the font smoothing on the MBP System Preferences -> Appearance. While it did seem to change it a bit, the text still did not look as sharp as it does Windows w/ ClearType on.

My text is sharp for me, it could of course be sharper, but do not forget that apple laptops(especially the 15" and 17") are designed for graphics, and i stress that word, my colors are amazing, picture and video come off as beautiful as the sky, so the screen is superior in every way to me, as it was meant to be, who would buy(waste their money) a high end 15"/17" for typing, and typing alone, simply they dont,

That's the first time I hear 15" screen is blurry. It me it seems like your screen is a little blurry. I thought that the 15" have better screens then the 17"

Eh. The longer I use my 15'' mbp, the more I realize that it's just that the resolution just isn't very high. Add the aggressively blurry antialiasing that mac os does to text and these high color gamut screens= text "seems" blurrier. I'll probably get used to it, but for some reason I'm sure text seemed sharper on the unibody 15'' I had before they released these new ones this month.
