I did buy a Quad Core i7 HP with 8gb RAM, bluray, 1gb graphics.. after using it for the full 14 days trial period, I decided to return it. Performance wise it is amazingly fast comparing to any pc I ever came across, installing programs is done in a jiffy. Quality of the screen however, is still not up to par to my white macbook that was 3 years old. Battery is another issue, only lasted me 2.5 hours. That won't even last me a flight from coast to coast, let alone trans pacific flight. And it's big and bulky, although it was exactly $1000 less comparing to a i7 MBP with 8gb RAM.

The Dell is different, it has RBG LED, which is a higher quality LED than the MBP has. And it has an optional battery which offers the same battery life as a MBP doing intensive work. ( The MBP will win doing light stuff because OSX has better power savings compared to Windows )

I was surprised to see this thread, as my 15" i7 is the fastest, sexiest computer I have ever owned!
Ditto, but I have an SSD so it was to be expected. Still, trying to use my work computer or my old computer (both aging Dell Latitude D series laptops) has become a real pain. Everything just flies on my MBP.

That, and the screen quality is really stunning. Makes it hard to look at the Dells.

so I got the Seagate momentus 500GB HDD. and the computer STILL seems slow.
Takes my mac 51 seconds to boot up with only adium loading at log in.
I see other times on her with c2d 13" MBP's loading PS, and other programs under 30 seconds.
when I got my momentus, I just did a ghosting over. Should I do a clean wipe and reinstall everything, or do you think the HDD could be faulty?
thanks in advance.
What do you mean by "did a ghosting over"? Did you "clone" the old drive onto the new one? That could be the source of many problems, including speed-related issues. The first thing Apple Care will suggest is a clean erase and install, followed by a reinstall of all of your software. There are reasons for that, and you should try it, although people have had good luck with using Migration Assistant to pull their data and settings over to a new machine. I found that problematic going from a PPC Mac to an Intel, but Intel-Intel should be better.
There are several posts where new users of the Seagate XT have said it took several reboots for the machine to get up to speed.....

Wow, this is all scary. It's about time that somebody comes along with an OS that works on non-Apple laptops. I would make the switch any time, but Windows is just too much of a bummer and none of these laptops come with Linux pre-installed, hence a hassle is to be expected.

Stores like avadirect.com let you pick from 5 or 6 different operating systems, preinstalled.

I give up.

I decided to RMA my Seagate XT cause I was only getting a xbench score of 28 as a disk subscore. Now with this new drive and doing the disk test 5-6 times in a row, I only get 34-36.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS PIECE OF ****. :(

I dont want to dump 600+ on 8gb ram and 160gb intel SSD if something is wrong with it.

do you guys think something is wrong?

sjm, I would absolutely suggest bringing it to the Apple genius bar and expressing you concern and show them the benchmark scores. I know a friend who did the same and they replace his computer, saying that there was a factory error. Although, the store could do nothing so they made him send it into apple. He got his new one and is is SUPER fast now. :apple: will take care of you, don't feel alone!

macbook pro needs...

1. quad core processors
2. a thicker laptop (bigger battery)
3. more heat sinks and more fans (1!) maybe coming out of the side
4. 512MB CARD STANDARD such as nvidia geforce gt 330m standard
5. 1 gb card for the 15 inch models.. maybe ati radeon mobility 4850 or 5850. maybe nvidia card
6. BLU RAY!
7.SSD 512 GB STANDARD
8. 300$ CHEAPER PRICE

What are you smoking and where did you get it?

5400RPM drive is definitely a problem on the i7 machine. I'm on 7200RPM and I geekbench like 6500 points, try it and compare to others.

I have the exact same MBP, except with double the RAM, yet, my Geekbench score is only 5700. Shouldn't it be higher than yours (6500)? Just curious. Want to make sure my brand new MBP (that I just got yesterday and thought, hmmm, this seems a little sluggish) is running at top performance. Does it make a difference if you run the 32-bit or 64-bit test?

I have only read a couple of user reports on the Seagate XTs in MacBook Pros. It seems like those drives are definitely not ready for prime time, at least in Macs. That's unfortunate, because it's a good interim concept for those of us who can't afford to pay through the nose for pure SSDs.

Have you looked in your Activity Monitor to see what processes are taking up your CPU / memory? Or looked in your logs to see if there's any weirdness going on?

See, I just ran geekbench and Im getting 5550-5700 as well and I only have 4gb ram.

I don't understand how he is getting 6500....

EDIT: I just did a geekbench test again with 64bit and got 6300....

I would try running it at 64-bit, but I dont want to pay. I feel like maybe I should be getting something higher than that though with double the RAM. Yes?

WOW

What a difference an SSD makes. I was using the 2.53GHz MBP with a 320GB 7´200 HD in it until yesterday, when I got my new 2.66GHz i7, with the 250GB SSD:

Xbench - 291.62
Disk Test - 306.51
- Sequential - 209.62
- Random - 569.97

KB

BTW - How do you paste an image into the post???

How in the world would you ever get a score that high?! My Disk results are terrrible..

How do I find out/make sure my hard drive is running at 7200 rpm?

You won´t believe how big a difference.

Startup (if that is important) is much much quicker. Handling within OSX seems snappier, and starting applications like Photoshop, Parallels, MSO, and I think it has a serious positive impact on battery life.

I agree with killerbob and verify his claim that it DOES increase battery life.

Not only that but if you bought the laptop because youre really mobile (i mean you have to have a good system with you for various reasons ALL THE time) and that your job makes it hard for you to be stationary on a desktop

then SSD is the way to go. I say this because my previous hard drives failed me when i needed them the most, a bad sector here a little dust molecule gets in and then scratches everything...etc.

because there are no movable parts inside it gives me a great peace of mind when using it in... abstract positions angles altitudes etc.

My top of the line 2010 April MBP i7 with 4GB RAM seems sluggish compared to the machine it previously replaced: the MBP C2D 2.4Ghz

I've installed a third party HDD 7200rpm drive but it seems that overall performance from C2D to i7 seems unimpressive (Chrome takes forever to lead, eyetv is sometimes unresponsive etc.)

my Xbench results:
overall: 179.34
CPU: 206.00
Thread: 558.63
Memory: 318.83
Quartz Graphics: 254.54
OpenGL Graphics: 238.05
UI: 377.51
Disk test
sequential: 132.18
random: 34.00

My i7 MBP is the fastest Mac I have owned to date. I have a 500GB 7200RPM HDD in here.

In my previous gen MBP C2D 2.8GHz I had an OCZ Vertex 250GB SSD and it was way fast booting up and loading apps, but its an 800$ Hard drive. But I sold that machine :(

I would get a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT and call it a day. They are great hard drives.

Hey guys, im really concerned ab0ut my MBP and so i did a Xbench like you all have and was wondering if you could see if i have a problem?

Appreciate any help and thanks in advance.

I was surprised to see this thread, as my 15" i7 is the fastest, sexiest computer I have ever owned! I currently have 2 other laptops (one apple, one dell) and a 2.93 C2D iMac. The i7 MBP kills all!!!! It outperforms not only in loading, but more importantly with video and audio processing.

I got the standard hdd and as soon as it arrived, I put in a 120Gb OCZ SSD. I later added the optibay with the original 500Gb HDD.

It was well worth the money. I am now looking to replace the HDD in my iMac with an SSD.

Pardon my hijacking, what's an optibay? I also have the slower 500GB HD option and I am looking for something faster. any advice on SSD drive to buy? thanks. also looking to upgrade my memory from 4GB to 8GB. thanks in advance.
