I'm having the same issue!
I purchased my Macbook Pro online, did some customizations and it was sent to me Oct 3. I thought core i7 processors were supposed to be the top of the line? The first time I used it and started browsing the internet it wasn't much faster than my 6 year old desktop when I first got it. Not impressive. After using it for a few days now the StartUP has gotten progressively slow, timing out at about 20-30 seconds before the password prompt screen. Browsing the internet (at this very moment) is about as fast as my desktop is now, which is pretty slow. I don't know what the benchmark speed is suppose to be, but I know a 2500$ laptop should perform a HELLUVA better than this. Watching HD videos are a pain, because it buffers every 3 seconds! is this seriously how it performs or is it just mine? Should I take it in to get it checked out?
The specs are 2.6ghz, intel core i7 processor, 8gb memory card, 512 mb display, 1tb hard drive...
+1 for the SSD upgrade.I recently got my 15" i7 and it seems very sluggish compared to my 15" 2.8 C2D.
are their any benchmark test I can run to see if its running up to par compared to others?
only thing I did to it was add a western digital scropio blue 640gb hard drive ( 5400rpm )
is anyone else feeling the same way about the i7?
( I mean sluggish booting up, starting apps ( photoshop, lightroom, itunes, iphoto etc )

Seems interesting in relation to this thread...
that's a poorly written article.
You can always manually control the processors by using an app called gfxcardstatus.
I wouldn't mind the demo machines in apple store using just the 650M to showcase all the apps. Why? Because they have Photoshop, Aperture, Final Cut Pro etc installed (graphics intense apps), and people do tend to mess around with it when they are testing the machine.

Your 1TB hard drive is a 5400rpm drive. Slap in a SSD then it'll be speeding
Sorry, I'm a newbie to this; why does it slow it down given the specs? Are you saying my processor basically has trouble "processing" my hard drive space?
@MattyDlotus , yeah the buffering is due to the slow internet. It picked up later in the night which is odd. I'm also experiencing a fan noise sound. Just started experiencing it a few seconds ago. Even though as I'm typing it's slowly getting less noisy.
Thanks for your help, guys. This is my FIRST Mac "computer" purchase. I've always had a desktop, but pressures from the family urged me to get a Mac. So I want it to only be as optimal as it claims.
You can process stuff fast but where are you gonna store the processed stuff or read it? The RAM has only so much space but you still have everything stored on the storage drive (HDD/SSD).
You can have a processor that 100 times faster, but if your hard drive's slow, your entire system will feel slow.
Mac is the same as PC. It's not any different. It's like driving a car vs an SUV. It's still an automobile.
I "think" I get the gist of what you're saying. That sucks.
