When was the last time the 16” was refreshed or updated? Current version is the 9 gen right? Where the 13” is 10 gen?

Late 2019, so it's getting pretty long in the tooth. I'm not really counting them just adding a higher gpu recently since that's not really a refresh. There's no known 45w intel chip for it yet though, so no idea when the next model will be ready. I'm also desperately waiting for the new version of this laptop!

Best Buy has the base mode ($2799) for $2499 this weekend - tempted to pick one up, I am doubtful they'll come how with a new one prior to Nov/Dec, plus specs are pretty impressive on the baseline model i9/8core...

Amazon has it for that price too.

I just came across an article on appleinsider that mentioned that some leakers had tweeted that a new Intel-based iMac is going to be released in the next few weeks. Would this extend to the 16" Macbook Pro as well?

The reason I ask is that I'm in a precarious situation: I've been holding out on buying a new Macbook for a while. My current Machine is a 2014 MBP 13" 8GB RAM and it is not powerful enough to do everything I need (4K monitor + data analytics). I'm getting ready to take more classes but I'm almost out of SSD space. Should I just buy the 16" or wait for the 10th gen refresh. I normally keep my tech for a while (about 5 years) so I'm going to be upset if a new 16" is released with faster RAM like the 2020 13". The ARM processor is not important to me, yet.

What do you guys think? Wait until October or buy the current 16"?

Maybe get some iCloud storage and turn on optimize storage on your MacBook Pro.

I'd wait - that is exactly what I am doing, although I do have a 2016 TB MBP with 16GB RAM and a 2TB HD so I am okay to wait a bit. I really hate this keyboard (which has been replaced 3 times now) and my battery is pretty much shot.

Also wondering why is everyone buying the. base base model i7 (usually $2399) as compared to the 8 core i9 at $2799? I get the price... but is there something else that I am missing? Locally here, Best Buy only has the i9 in stock and the i7 is sold our completely for weeks.....

I don't think that Intel iMac releasing imminently extends to a 2020 16" MBP. If they were going to release side by side or very close to each other, the MBP would likely be leaked now as well. That iMac is supposedly releasing sometime in August. With products releasing in the fall, i think we still have a couple weeks before we hear any solid leaks/rumors about those. If Apple is going to release another Intel based 16" MBP this year it will almost certainly be in the fall/winter, announced at the October event where iPad and Mac hardware is usually announced (and is presumed to be where they will unveil the first ARM Mac, which is so far looking to be a 13" Macbook Air or Macbook Pro).

I'm in almost exactly the same position as you though. Stuck between buying a 2019 16" now or holding out another couple months to see if one more Intel 16" MBP comes out at the end of this year. I also don't want to jump on ARM gen 1. I'll probably make the switch in like 2023 or 2024. I'll give it 2 or 3 cycles. I just don't know which is going to be the "last" Intel 16" MBP. I could see it going both ways. They might release one as a final spec bump, or they might just skip it since the new Intel chip isn't even available yet, and won't be a big performance boost. Leaving the next 16" MBP to be the ARM one currently presumed to be releasing mid-late 2021.

For someone like me who's on the look out for a new MBP, as a coder, even if it was for a few small hardware updates, it's completely worth it.

If the consensus though is that there won't be an update this year, I will order the current 16".
Get it as a refurb.

Same boat here, ordered the 16" 5500 32gb 1tb and its great but I work as a designer with multiple monitors and the fan/heat problem is way too prevalent. Have a few days return it but wondering if I should exchanged for 5600 or wait till October/Winter for the spec bump. Too be honest though with the state of the world right now, I dont know if all these shipments will go so smoothly so I'm opting on getting it now.

I would upgrade to 5600. And wait for 2nd gen ARM MacBook pro. Which is what I am now going to do. I was planning to use my 5600m 16 until the 1st ARM 16. But I think I will wait for 2nd gen. My 16 is so good. I will save some money and wait for the dust to settle on the ARM macbook pros.

I appreciate the advice! its been driving me nuts lately cus obviously a lot of money involved. I think I will opt for a 5600, Im upgrading from a mid 2012 MBP Retina 😅

My feeling is that Apple won't add 11th Gen, 10th will be the last of the Intel chips in their line up before going to ARM.

I'm hopeful apple understands that the transition from Intel to AARM will hit pro's the hardest and the 16" MBP with WiFi 6 (fingers crossed) would make an ideal 'last Intel' mac for many people, I'm one of the users who needs Bootcamp so i plan on buying a near maxed out 16" MBP 10th Gen if it arrives, for me switching the 16" MBP to ARM this year feels too soon (for apple), i think it will be the MBA and MB first to smooth the transition, I don't expect it in September as its not a Key Note product, it will be a quiet press release probably in October.
