Compare both options on the geekbench database and see for yourself if the delta between the 5500m and the M1 outweighs the 18% performance hit that emulating x86 programs on the new process architecture is worth it.

PS. get the m1 pro and enjoy not getting dead ended in a soon to be obsolete architecture, you won't be playing windows games but the 120hz display is really fine for the few competitive games I play with friends.

I know cpu performance is better on m1 but I didn’t take into account the architecture. Is it really that bad for intel macs?

There are several articles out there which compare the Intel (i5, i7 and i9) to the M1 and variants. The end results are always for single threaded performance Intel wins but slightly. For multithreaded performance the M1 leaves Intel way behind the rearview mirror.
Mind you these are synthetic benchmarks. Testing actual applications, those same articles, mention that software that has interaction through Rosetta 2 performs much better (percentage varies on M1-flavour) than on the actual Intel chip. Moreover, software optimized for M1 has huge gains in performance vs equivalent Intel.

With intel you can run egpu and that is another story for gaming and photo editing….and you can upgrade the egpu, while on m1 you are frozen … i have been gaming in bootcamp with egpu radeon xt5600…internal cpu temps were like 65-70c degrees, with slight fan noise. Capture One was benefiting too from the egpu….
If gaming is a priority and you insist on a Mac. Only the intel models will allow you to bootcamp into windows. This is of paramount importance as the vast majority of games available today are not playable on MacOS.
Yeah I forgot that intel macs can use eGPU. I guess I have made up my mind.
