Re defects vs. perfection

I'd say it depends on whether your issues are device specific or model specific.

The refresh issue is likely affecting ALL machines of that model so it is what it is.

Coil whine is luck of the draw, if yours is bad I would return it.

Again this is a Mac thing, I'm on version 2004 (preview of the May update) and no issues with my egpu

I saw it once with my Dell XPS 15. Resolved with a BIOS update and a Thunderbolt firmware update. Since then, it's been good (or at least up to the point where I sold the XPS 15 last month). 1909 is what I had on the XPS 15. That's also what I have now on the 16" MacBook, and yeah, as you can guess, the 16" will get Error 12 when I boot into Bootcamp. My 13" MacBook is still on 1809 and it works perfectly.

I mean... not to drag it out, but let's just say... this is the reason why I'm sticking to no eGPU with my next MacBooks. Perhaps past this point, it'll mostly be a Mac-only thing, but it's still annoying to have for those of us who would like to have a Mac setup with eGPU + Bootcamp. It's no one's fault, really, but it just looks like Thunderbolt 3 isn't as "equal" in implementation as it should be across all these different computers. Maybe I'll revisit this setup a few years down the line, but I don't feel like right now it's worth the hassle.
