Why don't you "spec that out" for us?

About six weeks ago I saw an online offer from Logic Buy posted at Laptop Magazine's site to buy an Envy 14" for $849 that was equipped with an i7 processor. That setup with it's GPU would melt a 13" MBP in performance.

For $849.

Come June Windows laptops get new trackpads and drivers that work like Apple's do.

I've specteded this out a few times. An i7 processor is also not an end-all. HP, Dell, Sony, etc allow you to really design your own system in a easier format than Apple. There are thousands of possibilities and the two options I chose which I felt were similar costs about the same. Your price listed is also a sale price; the Envy is not usually that inexpensive.

As far as a melting in performance, performance capability can only be defined as how well a computer suits your own applications. For graphics users, the Envy may be much better with quad core processors and a higher resolution screen; for me, it would be more of a frustration with the user reported battery life of 2-3 hours.

And I will believe it when I see it as far as better trackpads. There have been 'better' trackpads coming down the pipeline for years and they are never that much better, and I do not know of any trackpad in the class as the multitouch ones on the MacBook family.

It still had no Turbo I think

Comprehensive test of the new Intel IGP:

Note tests were running on the high end 3.4Ghz Quad Sandy Bridge with 12EU and graphics clock of 850/1350Mhz (Turbo). Overall performance is about the same as the ATI 5450 (win some /lose some). Still has some compatibility troubles as a few games wouldn't run.

The Dual Core Sandy Bridge Mobile processors Apple will likely use will only clock at 2.5-2.6Ghz (i5) with the Graphics core at 650/1150Mhz (Turbo) or 2.7Ghz i7 at 650/1300Mhz, so the above is absolute best case for the Intel graphics chip.

if intel releases ivy bridge in 2011 then only the Oregon fab will be making those CPU's for a while. and Acer/Dell/HP have priority before Apple
How do they have priority over apple? Wasnt apple getting the smaller versions of the C2D for its Air before anyone else? Intel and Apple have worked well together before. I kinda think Intel relishes the cachet that the Apple name lends to its otherwise frumpy products.
Seriously, outside of geek-friendly forums such as this, most laptop users really dont know or care about the different chips or their relative performance specs. Try explaining to anyone why a current 2.4ghz MBP is faster than a 2 year old 2.4GHZ MBP. "so its the ...memory?".

That is weird of Intel. Doesn't make sense. Here is says the mobile processors are going to use the 12EU parts just at lower frequencies. Which would make sense.

Maybe your article is wrong? If it is true Intel has made custom processors in the past for Apple, something to think about.

Nothing wrong with the article. High end desktop processors like the one tested has 12EU and are clocked high.

Mobile parts are also 12EU and are clocked lower.

The will be 6EU parts for lower end desktop machines. The very same site also tested the 6EU part, which has much lower performance:
