Hi Guys,

Came into work this morning and my MBP 2017 15" w TouchBar was completely dead.

I shut the lid on it Friday evening and left it plugged in over the weekend. Coming in this morning it was stone cold, still plugged in (power supply and cable still works as I check that on my MacBook) but shows absolutely no sign of life.

I've held the power button down for an extended period, but plugged and and not plugged in. Nothing at all happens.

Any ideas are most welcome.

Thanks.

If actually nothing happens, then it sounds like a dead mainboard. Maybe some kind of short circuit. Since it's a 2017 model, Apple will probably just swap it under warranty.

Try again in a couple of hours I have had this once after an automatic update and then it was fine an hour later. If that doesn't work its back to apple to be fixed I'd imagine.

Thanks Guys, I am waiting for the battery to drain out - that might help - but have no idea how long that would take.

Any key combinations to try to see it that jolts it back to life?

I can't see running the battery down will do anyhting. I think you ought to call apple and schedule them to repair it, as it appears to me that the TouchBar has failed and needs to be replaced.

Is there a history of this, resulting in what I see that you are aware of? Ta.

Unlike the keyboard issue that we see fairly regularly here, its quite rare to have someone ask for help because of a dead Touchbar. Regardless of the cause, the TouchBar is not working as it should on a laptop that costs nearly 3k. Given that high price, I would not put up with needing to drain the computer and find other ways to jolt it back to life but rather contact Apple and have them fix it.

Thanks, but I tried this but system gives zero response.

Problem is, I don't want company confidential data put at risk, sending it off is a bad option for me. :-(

The solution is simple:
Take it back and request either repair or replacement.

If the confidential data IS THAT IMPORTANT to you, then get a sledgehammer and destroy it.
Then go out and buy a new one.

Expensive solution tho, hoping that if someone else has encountered this they may have a cheaper option!

Your data is secure if FileVault is turned on and you have a complex password. Hopefully you had a backup, though, as likely the main board will be replaced and the SSDs are not removable.

Apple will fix or replace the machine. Yes, it sucks when a $3000 goes belly up, but it happens sometimes. Fortunately, Apple has a good network of stores and a fairly good mail-in turnaround time for repairs.

Same thing happened to mine, too. Closed the lid on Friday night and did not wake up on Saturday. Tried resetting SMC which did not work.

Nearest Apple Store is 4 hours away, Apple did not want me to mail in, instead suggested me to send it to Staples which is an authorized service provider, seriously..

Staples people told me that they will ship it to Apple for repair, why can't I just ship it.. They also told me that they got several Mac laptops during the weekend which is unusual.

Seriously doubt if the CPU fix is causing any trouble. Btw mine is out of warranty for 2 months :(

That's weird they should've given you an option to ship it in. Either way if its a major repair you'll be out a lot of money.

Okay, so it might not just be me. There may have been a pending update that kicked in? Do you think yours had an update pending?

If others have this problem - it could be a design flaw so Apple should cover you/us.

You are covered under warranty anyway, you have FileVault turned on and Apple techs couldn’t give a crap what’s on your hard drive anyway. Just send it in for repair.

Found this:
If you troubleshooting a Touch Bar that has stopped working on an Late 2016 MacBook Pro, where the Touch Bar is completely black, try these steps to restore functionality:

  1. Create a new local user account (to use temporarily for steps 2-4)
  2. Reset the NVRAM
  3. Log in as the new user
  4. Log out then log in using the primary account
  5. Assuming the Touch Bar is working, delete the user account you created in step 1

I don't think his Touch Bar is dead.
I think his MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (as opposed to MacBook Pro without Touch Bar) is dead.
