Problem is, I don't want company confidential data put at risk, sending it off is a bad option for me. :-(

Your only real option is to send it Apple for repair/replace.

How funny, I had this very exact thing happen to my MacBookPro 15' with Touch Bar, however mine is late 2016. All was fine, closed the lid and went to bed. Next day it was completely dead. Nothing "woke" it up, including a trip to Genius Bar with no resolution, so I called the support (since it was out of warranty for 2 months) and pleaded to let me get it repaired without having to pay 799. They're sending me a prepaid postage box to send it off to them and hopefully will get it back fixed. But something was up in the air, how come same thing happening to people exact same week? WEIRD

Was the machine under heavy use prior to the touch bar dying? I'm curious to know whether its from the T1 processor somehow affected by heat generated by GPU/CPU, similar to how the 2011 GPU were failing, possibly the solder detaching.

In EU everyone has 2 years full warranty (Apple care is worthless), so why not in US...
$799 for a repair way to expansive, you can almost buy a decent 13' laptop :)

It has been a week, still nothing from either Apple or Staples. Mine is a day one purchase, so also 2 months out of warranty. Luckily I paid with Amex, they should cover whatever cost..

I'm traveling next month for 30 days, if still don't have it fixed, will have to carry my 2011 17 inch Mac which has had the GPU "fixed" but still have glitches. Oh Apple :)

I had this happen to my mother's MacBook. Totally dead, couldn't even do an SMC reset. Made an appointmentment at genius bar for a few days later, left it unplugged for 24 hours, then plugged in for another 24 hours. The morning I was to take it in, it suddenly booted up after holding the power key for an extended time. Never had the problem again. So weird.

This is what I am hoping for. I'm away for a few days so I'm waiting for battery to drain, when I'm back end of month I'll try this. You never know!!

Just got mine back. "Able to boot and passed diagnostics, return to client"... o_O Not sure what happened, appears it recovered while being shipped to Apple...

Great news, I'm home after travel on Monday. I'm crossing my fingers.

Same thing happened to my 2016 13" MBP w/ TB. I used it early in the day. Came back to it around 5pm. The battery was dead which was odd because I charged it to 100% before I closed the lid. Fine, I put it to recharge. As it was booting up a grey screen appeared while booting which I knew wasn't normal. After about 10 minutes the charge percentage did not increase, so I unplugged the power cable and the machine died. It did not turn back on (after about a month of having it w/ no issues). Troubleshooted the best I could. Apple said they would replace it but I opted to just return it since there were too many horror stories with that model. I now have a 2017 13". One day the OS crashed but I was able to reinstall and my data was still there. Little bugs with this thing but I need to deal with it for many years haha

Curious if anyone was able to get it repaired or working?

This exact same thing happened to me as well over the weekend. Just got back from a trip to the Apple Store earlier where I was told it’d be 799 since it’s out of warranty and without Apple Care.

During my 1.3 years of owning it, I’ve had 3 keyboard repairs and an entire logic board replacement due to faulty parts and the usual keyboard stick issue.

Under normal circumstances, totally understand charging $ since I have no warranty. This laptop seems to not be a normal circumstance though, as I think it’s totally reasonable to expect a $2200 laptop to work for more than 1.5 years without needing a repair every 2 months.

Agreed. But the same can be said for a $600 laptop. Money doesn't buy reliability. It buys performance and capability. Still, variations exist from machine to machine and out of the millions made, some will break. That's why there are warranties. When the warranty is up, we all become risk takers. That's just life.

Yep. Unfortunately it's not reasonable to expect free repairs after more than a year. That's why there is the option of being Apple Care to extend the warranty.

Hi Guys,

Came into work this morning and my MBP 2017 15" w TouchBar was completely dead.

I shut the lid on it Friday evening and left it plugged in over the weekend. Coming in this morning it was stone cold, still plugged in (power supply and cable still works as I check that on my MacBook) but shows absolutely no sign of life.

I've held the power button down for an extended period, but plugged and and not plugged in. Nothing at all happens.

Any ideas are most welcome.

Thanks.
This is a company laptop. Take it to your IT department. They’ll deal with Apple and deal with the data issues. It’s not your responsibility and you can make things worse if you try to fix it yourself.

Fully agree, but the fact that i've already had the computer repaired multiple times makes me hesitant to now pay nearly 50% of the laptop cost to repair it yet again. Variations can exist and every laptop has the potential to be a lemon, but I guess I just feel a bit burned. It doesn't help that I'm able to see multiple people online who are experiencing the same issue, meaning this is quite possibly some hardware/software defect in the product itself.

My 2011 MBP was an incredible machine that never caused issues and still works to this day, so I guess I just had my expectation that this one would be the same, and I'm frustrated and upset. Repairing, selling, and replacing seems to be my only option, and that option is extremely expensive.
