Would choosing the 2.2 over the 2.6 give any (noticeable) thermal headroom for the GPU (especially 560X) when both the CPU & GPU are taxed? I haven't seen any tests comparing the 2.2/560X vs the 2.6/560X.

Anecdotally, I have a 2.2/16/1 TB/560x, and it runs cooler to the touch than the 2.6/16/512/560 I had originally. Interestingly, it scores the same on Cinebench, and within .7% on Geekbench. For whatever THAT's worth!

How much cooler? Did you measure it?

FWIW I had an i9 and sent it back in favor of a 2.2Ghz i7 that was running cooler and faster, not to mention with better battery life. I also stuck with the 555X. The base model pro this year is incredibly fast and the best value in a Macbook Pro in a long time. Love it.

I would get the base in a heartbeat if it came with 512GB SSD as standard :(

It looks reading in this forum that the minimum storage space recommended is 512 SSD and the best overall 2018 MBP is the mid-model i7 2.6/16GB/512 SSD/560x ?

I got 512, but that doesn't mean everyone should. My needs are such that I needed more then 256. Also regarding the 2.6, I personally think the 2.2 is a better deal, since you get a cooler machine that doesn't run as hot. Just my personal opinion. If you need/want a more powerful GPU, then yeah the 2.6/560x makes more sense.

You also have the 560x option with the 2.2 cpu

True, but I wonder of the 560 is part of the reason why the 2.6 is hotter then the 2.2

2.6/560x/512GB - 2,800
2.2/560x/512GB - 2,700

Is it worth the 100 dollars at that point to jump up to the 2.6? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t really know. I got the 2.2 with 560x gpu. I don’t have any heat issues.

I grabbed a 2.6ghz 10 days ago and installed the usual MS office, Parallels Desktop for a VM, Chrome, Evernote etc.

Without Parallels the average temp is in the 40-45 c
With it its around 50-55 with bursts up to 90 c on intensive use.

Indon’t know if that’s normal but Inthink it’s abit hot in use. On another note, battery is excellent after indexing but drains very fast with virtual VM.

I don’t think the 560x was ever triggered during my tests (mostly CPU related).

I got the 2.6 over the 2.2 for ease of swap in case of issue but wondering if this was the right choice now given the heat levels observed.

/MilK

I think the latest software update helps to reduce the heat on my 15" MBP 2018 (2.6/512/560x). Has anyone updated and experienced the same?

In India, we get only stock machines. No upgrades are offered since there are no company owned Apple Stores, we only have Apple Premium Resellers at best.

In that case, which would be a better machine? I would be inclined to a 2.6 solely because it comes with 512GB.

You know you can ask the Authorized Resellers to order a custom MBP for you, right? I don't live in India but I have asked an Authorized Reseller nearby before and they said they can easily do it but Apple usually takes longer to ship the products to them.

Back in the Steve days, I know the option existed, to ask them to order a custom MBP. I am talking of 2011, when I ordered my stock MBP, there was the option to get a BTO. I chose not to, considering the time it would take and I did not need a custom notebook. I have enquired a couple of weeks ago, and I got refused. Maybe it was this guy in this state I am in. I will ask in a different state and see the response. Considering that Apple's ecosystem is not very evolved in India, how would you go about my question again? :)

I personally went with the 2.6 but I haven’t received mine yet. Should be here in a week.

Hi,
I'm hesitating between the 555x 560x. My main usage on the mac is app development (XCode, AppCode, Visual Studio Code, Android Studio) and I don't do any video editing or gaming. I do however have one 4K monitor and sometimes one additional 1440 monitor. On my current 2010 mbp (Intel Iris Pro, no dedicated GPU) I do notice some laggy UI on the 4K monitor.

Is the 555x for this setup? I am tempted by getting the 560x but I wonder if it's not an overkill for my usage. It seems also that the 560x runs hotter which is something I don't like.

Appleinsider says:
the 560X graphics chip is well worth the extra $100 for everyone but photo editors.
but does this apply also for users who don't do any video editing?

For your use case (or anyone's realistically), you will get no noticeable benefit from 560x. Multiple monitors can be handled by iGPU's these days, so having any dGPU will make it a breeze as it is.

People have done iOS app dev on 12" MacBook's, that says it all really.

thanks Ma2k5
I went for the 2.2, 512GB, 555x. I originally wanted 1TB but I've got a 300€ discount this one from in a local apple authorised reseller

Sorry. I believe Adorama and BH are the only ones that allow for tax free purchase. Still with edu pricing from apple and a free pair of beats that you could sell , you still get better deal buying straight from apple.

They aren't including the free pair of beats right now.

Be careful ordering from shops that do not require sales tax. The Supreme Court just ruled that states can collect sales tax on online orders even when the retailers do not have a presence in your state. Also, some states already have statutes requiring you to list these purchases from retailers that did not collect taxes and you must pay the taxes directly.

That is only for certain states. Not all states were included in that.

He posted that four months ago, and at the time the back to school promo was in full effect.

Which states did the SCOTUS exempt from its decision?

I know Texas wasn't included in that. I know there were more too.

My bad, didn't look at the date.
