My 15 inch 2018 MBP (2.6ghz i7, 32gb, 560X, 1TB) is plugged in but showing as not charging, and is in fact decreasing in battery life (meaning that even though it is plugged in it seems that eventually it will just switch off). Sometimes it starts to charge but eventually stops. I have tried different wall sockets and the different USB C ports on the Mac to no avail. This is concerning a) because this is a new machine and b) because I don't have access to an Apple Store at the moment because I am out of the country and need my Mac for photo/video editing. I will be able to go on Saturday but am hoping that this is a temporary issue. SMC reset has made no difference. Thanks in advance for any help.

Tried the new SMC reset instruction right? Process is a bit different for T2 chip Macs.

Mac notebook computers with the Apple T2 chip
Try this first:

  1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
  2. After your Mac shuts down, press and hold its power button for 10 seconds.
  3. Release the power button, then wait a few seconds.
  4. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
  2. After your Mac shuts down, press and hold the right Shift key, the left Option key, and the left Control key for 7 seconds. Then keep holding those keys while you press and hold the power button for another 7 seconds.
  3. Release all three keys and the power button, then wait a few seconds.
  4. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

Thanks. I did do that and it still didn't work unfortunately.

Have you tried a different power adapter if you have access to one? And/or a different charging cable? You might want to see if the battery charges when the machine is off (as a way to hold out for a while).

Make sure you backup your files now. Don't know if this is the same problem, but I experienced this in the first couple of weeks when I bought my 2016 MBP. Eventually the machine died when the battery depleted, and I was never able to charge it again. Apple store swapped it out for a new one. If I didn't have a backup, I would have lost my files, because the Apple store people said they had no way to copy them off at the time.

Thanks. Sadly no access to any other charger. I do regular backups. I tried yesterday to charge it whilst sleeping and closed to no avail. Then off and closed and still nothing. I hope something can be done to fix it...

I think your best bet is going the apple store, as you had mentioned. Something doesn't appear right.

I'd say in the mean time, look at how best you can easily repeat the issue, so when you hand it off to them, they can repeat the issue

Agreed with maflynn above.
If at-home quick fixes do nothing, take it back.
It's still under warranty.
Get THEM to fix or replace it.

It seems to be a Mojave beta issue as restoring to HS SEEMED to fix it. But regardless of the OS such a crucial thing shouldn’t be affected, so I’m restoring back to Mojave for when I take it in.
