My theory of why Apple added this annoying any-key-or-trackpad-power-on feature is that when they introduced the Force Touch Trackpad with no moving parts and just a haptic tap to make it feel like a traditional click, they thought it was annoying when the machine was powered off that the trackpad didn't click when pressed, which gave away it wasn't a "normal" trackpad.

So they probably thought "I know, why don't we make the trackpad click even when powered off, and while we're at it make the machine power on when the trackpad is "clicked", and oh we might as well make any key do the same thing while we're at it".

I can kind of understand the "cosmetic" desire for the trackpad to "click" when powered off, albeit only a cosmetic thing because who really cares (apart from Apple of course) if the trackpad stops clicking when powered off, but they didn't really need to make it power the machine on too. One step too far methinks.

They should at least provide a setting to disable it based on personal preference, just like they finally did for the power-on-chime which I always found annoying when powering on my Mac in quiet locations like libraries etc. Come on Apple :)

Makes sense. But you know what with the launch of Airpods Max, it is starting to look like a different story. This appears to be entire ecosystem of "always on" devices, ready to go. MKBHD's y/t video review of Airpods Max tells the exact story that they don't power off till you put them in a stupid ugly looking case. There isn't "power off" button and it keeps draining battery regardless of music being played or not.

I honestly believe these features are annoying, give us some control to at least power our devices off. To this day I hate my MBPro 16 inch when it powers on while I am cleaning the screen and accidentally touch a key (happens all the time).

My 16" MacBook Pro only wakes after pushing the power key after the Big Sur update. Does anyone else see the same behavior?

Please, do not respond with "why do you want this?" or "you can lock the screen to clean it", or other. All of us who want this disabled already know all that. But it is not what we would like to have. Thanks!!

For anyone else who wants this "feature" disabled...

As posted earlier and elsewhere, disable auto-boot on lid open or power cable plug in:

http://osxdaily.com/2017/01/19/disable-boot-on-open-lid-macbook-pro/

Disable auto-boot when you press any key on the keyboard or press the trackpad...

Nothing done by Apple, yet. But I got this from a chat with Apple support:
  • let people know to either call/chat or to leave feedback here.
  • The more we escalate this and get a lot of feedback, the faster Apple will release it, trust me, I have seen it happen!
So let's do as they ask, and hopefully we'll get what we desire.
I have sent a request to Apple as per your link on my wife's behalf for her 13" 2018 Touchbar MBP. Thank you for the suggestion and link. I'd encourage everyone else to do the same.

anyone think they do this on purpose to keep the computer quasi running all the time so it can spy on us with the internal microphones?? hmm
My point is they want us to undermine (not sure it is the correct term) our computer/battery, etc, so we buy another time before the standard 3/4 years...
Since some years Apple started to became evil (to me)... A factory like Apple should build things we could upgrade to keep it the longest time possible, Earth ressources start to be rare, so we should not waste materials...
Since 2012 first, with T2 chip, then with new macbook/pro/air design where you can't even replace ram, or ssd, but this is another debate...
Apple is no more Green....
I miss Steve Jobs.

Got a new MBP (my old one was a 2014), I turned it off to clean the trackpad and keys and of course it turned itself back on when I wiped the trackpad, how annoying. Here is a workaround, not perfect but better than nothing:
Open Pages.
Go to Full Screen (green button).
You can now clean the trackpad as nothing happens while you swipe the trackpad with a damp cloth.
You can do much the same on most keys (random gibberish will appear on the Pages document but who cares).
Be careful with the Function keys - fortunately those don't get as dirty except the Esc key.
When you are through cleaning close Pages and click on Delete. The gibberish document will go away and you will have a reasonably clean trackpad and keyboard.
