FWIW I have File Vault turned on in my 2012 cMBP and it runs fine. The only time I notice any hit in performance is when logging in from a reboot or cold boot. It takes maybe 2 seconds longer to decrypt and login.
It also has a Samsung 840 EVO SSD too. I suppose if it had a normal HDD one would notice the hit more.
There is no visible performance hit from FV2 being enabled on modern systems (2012 and up, usually— core i systems). Even if there was, it is easily outpaced by massive biannual SSD improvements in random R/W.
FV1 had much greater performance hits, but it was also used on older hardware.

Also, the majority of people simply MUST encrypt their drives today because so many sensitive transactions are done on them. Taxes, banking, etc. There's enough on most peoples' laptops to steal their identity if you don't encrypt it and it gets stolen.
EDIT: sorry, I mean 2011 and up MBP systems. Core i processors have the hardware ability to take on FV2 in stride.
Hm im really in a dilemma whether i should use FileVault or not now. The thing is my Mac is mostly at home so i don't know if its worth it on the other hand if there is no perceivable performance loss I'm thinking why not.
