The MBP has horribly outdated graphics. Therefore the entire premise of the thread is null and void.
Well, putting windows on it obviously means extra cost (and it is high as it is). When you talk about long battery life you probably refer to browsing internet on OS X. Now try running games in Windows on the same laptop. You'll get the same 1.5...2 hours. Besides, obviously modern laptops with i5 chips offer the same performance but lower power consumption.
Well, to be fair, the guy probably got hold of a decent laptop for the first time in his life (nothing wrong with that) so he might be genuinely excited.
I will not say that the 17" MBP isn't a good gaming laptop but it is not great. Some games I am sure run quite well but the 9600M GT (which is decent but not for $2,000+) is not something I would put my faith in.
A friend of mine has a Sager laptop. Paid $2k for it over a year ago and it most definitely outperforms the top end current MBP, costing $3k. If the MBP is the best gaming laptop, what's the Sager, then?

I would not call the 9600M GT a top video card for gaming but lets keep it in perspective which I do not think it rates as poorly as people make it sound here.
In my case I like to play LOD under OS X (Cider) and LOD2 under Windows 7 (via BootCamp). Since the 15" is only 1440x900 the 9600m GT does a very good job with all the graphics maxed out. Obviously as you add more pixels (1920x1200) you start to loose performance accordingly.
Now with Windows 7 I do shutdown all the services that aren't needed for a few extra frames but I have no complaints. BTW: You can get my script on MR under the Windows sub-section.

If the 9600m GT would have been 256 bits wide instead of 128 we would have seen a better performance rating...

I think the OP is just really excited about how beautiful/well games run on the MBP 17". Obviously not the best gaming laptop. But the best gaming laptops are more of desktop replacements anyways.
Wtf, how harsh are some of you really. The OP is just airing his own opinion, from everyone that I know in life I would struggle to find someone who didn't think a MBP was amazing, playing games or whatever.
These are 'normal' people. Most people here know far more than the average person, therefore can be critical of performance. I recognise that there are more suitable laptops out there for gaming, but I know one thing for sure, when I got my MBP 15" last year and tried some games out I was blown away.
I didn't try the most top end games but C&C, Half Life 2, COD, all were running pretty damn well...I was extremely excited! So is the OP it seems, which is fine. Maybe he hasn't had much experience of other laptops. I had a ****** DELL before my MBP, so for me it was the greatest gaming experience ever. I also have a PS3 and 360.

OP is a hardcore fanboy, i have a 15 macbook pro, hp envy and an m11x attached to a 24 inch apple display. The m11x destroys the pro in terms of gaming and it also gets more battery life. I have the CPU overclocked to 1.73 ghz which is perfect for a machine of its size. Im thinking about selling the 15 pro and envy and buying a 27 inch imac. Perfect combo imo.
The Vaio Z and F use the GT330m, which is a tarted up GT240m, which is a rebadged 9600m, which is an overclocked 8600m.
Gotta love Nvidia. 3 generations of the same pile of silicon and we're here fighting over it.
(I think the 330m is somewhere around 30-40% faster than a 9600m though). It's like the difference between a regular corvette and the $150,000 model.

Is this true ? people always get me confused with all the NVIDIA rebadging, does it really happen this way ?

I was wrong, the 240M has no direct relation to the notebook 9600/8600m, but it is equivalent in spec to the desktop 9600GSO.
Either way, I'd still expect the 330m to be a good 40% faster than a 9600m.

The graphics card in the MBP can not run most modern games at higher settings. Hell my iMac barely can. Sure you can run any game on almost any laptop purchased in the last year, but it depends on your detail levels.
