matte or glossy? Depends...
The question of glare and outdoor lighting visibility is perhaps secondary. I tested both the matte and glossy screen side by side for an extended period of time.
It seems to me that for watching videos and DVDs, the glossy screen is much more pleasing to the eye. However, upon closer inspection between the two, there is no doubt that the fine details and nuances of the color, tone, levels are all lost on the glossy screen.
So I suppose that one of the important questions to ask when deciding upon whether to get matte or glossy is what will I primarily use it for? If it is more for entertainment (i.e., movies, DVDs, slideshows, etc...), then it is most likely that you will enjoy the glossy screen more. If however, levels, tones, detail, authentic saturation, etc... are things that you often discern when working, then you will definitely need the matte screen.
Given that in the end, you can always make do with either the glossy or matte screen, but the question is which one is more conducive for the type of use that you will be most involved in while working.
Finally, on a side note, I wonder how many people have tried using a glossy screen for a protracted period of time while working on a text document? I personally have doubts about using a glossy screen while working on documents (on Word or Pages) for an extended period of time. I have this feeling that the eye fatigue will be more pronounced on a glossy screen.
