and it makes watching dark scenes in movies pretty bad.

I can't say I've watched any dark scenes on a glossy screen, however I had to turn off all the lights in the house (open plan) to be able to watch Casino Royale on my Matte screen MBP. I think, overall, you can't really argue either two to be better, just better suited to someones uses & preferences.

IMO the Matte vs. Glossy argument is very much flawed, and the only way to know if you're a glossy or a matte person is to experience the two.

I own both a macbook and MBP (macbook has gloss, MBp does not). What I prefer? I couldnt care less actually.

But I will say Glossy is much easier to clean and looks tons better than matte when the screen is off.

Any advice on how you go about cleaning your glossy clean? my screen never looks clean after I wipe it.

I wipe both my matte and glossy screens with dry cloth.

You mean after wiping you still have dust left? :/

I was watching TV on my MBP yesterday and it was a sunny day, I sure am glad I got the matte screen. No glare and clear as crystal and no over saturated colours.

I love my glossy screen. I use it outside and generally have little to no problems with it. The only thing that bothers me slightly about it is that finger prints become amazingly apparent in it when the sun hits it or the screen is off. My friends with the matte don't seem to have this problem as bad. It doesn't really effect the experience for me it's just a pet peeve. I use IKlear whenever I become annoyed by it and have very little problems otherwise. If I were to chose again I would still chose the glossy. I get complements on how clear the video on my screen is all the time.

matte or glossy? Depends...

The question of glare and outdoor lighting visibility is perhaps secondary. I tested both the matte and glossy screen side by side for an extended period of time.

It seems to me that for watching videos and DVDs, the glossy screen is much more pleasing to the eye. However, upon closer inspection between the two, there is no doubt that the fine details and nuances of the color, tone, levels are all lost on the glossy screen.

So I suppose that one of the important questions to ask when deciding upon whether to get matte or glossy is what will I primarily use it for? If it is more for entertainment (i.e., movies, DVDs, slideshows, etc...), then it is most likely that you will enjoy the glossy screen more. If however, levels, tones, detail, authentic saturation, etc... are things that you often discern when working, then you will definitely need the matte screen.

Given that in the end, you can always make do with either the glossy or matte screen, but the question is which one is more conducive for the type of use that you will be most involved in while working.

Finally, on a side note, I wonder how many people have tried using a glossy screen for a protracted period of time while working on a text document? I personally have doubts about using a glossy screen while working on documents (on Word or Pages) for an extended period of time. I have this feeling that the eye fatigue will be more pronounced on a glossy screen.

My 2¢

I do my text work for my university on a MacBook - no difference glossy or matte to me. I have an iMac with matte screen and it is as comfortable to work on as the glossy screen (its bigger though :p)

I have absolutely no glare on my MacBook's screen, probably it it positioned right :)

ahhhh....going crazy!

can't decide....glossy looks nice...matte cleans nice. maybe I should wait another year or so, there is going to be something else out there

I have a MB, so obviously i have a glossy display. It is great for videos and it shows the color really well. But the glare is sometimes annoying. If i had the choice I would have gone for the matte finish, just so I don't have to deal with the glare.

Glossy

I love my new Glossy Hi Res screen. The glare has not been an issue I haven't really noticed. I have a window with light coming through over my shoulder and it's never been an issue. Just love the colours coming off the screen!

Okay this is proabably a stupid question, but exactly how do you tell the difference. Until I saw this article I didn't know the MBP came with Matte or Glossy Screens?

If you get matte, you will never regret not getting glossy. If you get glossy, there will be times when you regret not getting matte. Hope that makes sense :D

Easy. Glossy is like mirror when turned off, matte is not.

As you can tell, it is a matter of personal preference (even tho some are quite passionate about their preferences)

You will need to compare them side by side and evaluate based on your own preferences and the work you do

17" MBP Matte was my choice
