It is a bit early to fill in satisfaction surveys.

The op has merely been given the go ahead to lodge his computer with Apple for it to be assessed for repair under the 8600m extended repair program.

My nearly 3 year old 2008 was rejected due to alleged water damage on the hard drive. I believe the apparent corrosion on the upgraded hard drive was sticky tape i used to reattach the hd bumpers. I found nothing near the motherboard when i dismantled it. This machine spent its entire life on a boat so maybe there was some substance to apple's claim.

I can't really complain though. Several weeks earlier my ipod classic was replaced by the same store without hesitation after i admitted spilling yogurt on the click wheel and enquired about getting it repaired.

The important thing is that your mbp is still able to boot. Apple will reject it if they can't get it to boot.

Not really.

He got a extension of apple care so the repair should be free.
However, when his machine is repaired, he will buy a new one an give the other machine to his wife.

This just made me want to buy Apple Care. Never saw the point before but now I get it. Great customer service and its good to know that even a couple years down the road they are still willing to help.

And I would give the old one to my wife too. She gets the nicer car (at least she thinks so), the ring, and the joy of taking care of the toddlers day to day. selfish woman. its my macbook. jk.

And this is definitely a case of a win-win situation...imagine he calls up and apple tells him to get lost, your warranty is over. Well, now he does not buy a new Apple, and might not buy one down the road either. He also bitches and moans to anyone who will listen. (sorry to put words in your mouth OP, but it's what I would do ;) )

Instead, Apple says bring it by, we will honor the warranty and guess what...now the guy is not only going to buy an new Apple, but he is posting his good deed story to the internet where it will be read by hundreds.

That is the way a company should be run!

Damn straight. So many companies are short sighted about the ding to their bottom line a repair would cause, but have no _long_ term perspective on the lost revenues caused by bad press, poor customer retention, etc.

I'm on my 3rd small business (tech sector) and we always go that extra mile, even when it's cut our margins ... the result is excellent long term relationships, extra business with that client and new business because of positive word-of-mount.

No, he didn't get an extension of AppleCare. He was given a free repair based on a 4 years extended warranty for an issue with the 8600 GT GPU. It is always 4 years from date of purchase, and doesn't depend on whether one has bought the 3 year AppleCare or not.

Looks like your covered under the extended coverage for the 8600, so this isn't an apple care issue. Even if it were, 9 days is not to long out of coverage. Apple replaced my MacBook Pro almost 2 months out of warranty.

Congratulations! It was jessica.'s crossed fingers and legs that made it happen! :D

People keep mentioning the 8600M extended warranty, but Tech Support never mentioned it, or even suggested it was a graphics issue, they only mentioned the AppleCare

BTW, I found a website - iFixIt I think it was - that said the startup chime repeating every 5 secs meant there was no RAM in the machine. I tried with a spare DIMM I have but it was the same so I'm suspecting it may be the memory controller.

Anyway, my good lady took it to the Apple Store today and they said 5-7 days turnaround and the paperwork they gave her said they'll ring me within 48 hours

Just had a phone call from the store. It's fixed and ready for collection. They replaced the logic board. Exactly 24 hours; I'm impressed, and somewhat surprised they had a board for such an old machine at the store (not had time to send it away) :)

I'm willing to bet it was the 8600. The solution for that is to replace the logic board. My girlfriend went through 3 replacements of this thing. It kept getting replaced with another faulty 8600. Eventually :apple: just gave her a brand new MBP because of the hassle of repairs. Now she has an 11" MBA as "backup" against downtime (and because she thinks it cute).

Curiously, the Wi-Fi Mac address is the same - I thought the Wi-Fi chip was on the logic board
