It's funny...I never noticed anything wrong until I started looking for it lol

Or they just live with the issues.

Every piece of tech I own has it's flaws. Even my $6,000 cameras have compromises and sometimes just need to be powered off and back on. And my cars do weird things at different times.

I just received my new refurbished MBPtb 15" on Monday and it's going back. The keyboard is unusable for me, especially the space bar. Nobody at Apple gave a flying rat's a$$ about my problem. Just send it back. No offer to work out the problem, offer suggestions, replacements, not to mention the $50 I spent on skins that I foolishly installed immediately to protect my new $3000 investment I am so disgusted. I'll be shopping for a PC. Of course, that means new software too. Thanks, Apple. Your support is non-existent. I'll re-think my future purchases too.

This is not true. I didn't think it was my keyboard .. thought it was me acclimating.. but a failed admin password lit up the light bulb that led to awareness of the issue.

Autocorrect and Touch ID for admin PW is hiding instances of this issue.
[doublepost=1504204816][/doublepost]So are people having the same issue with 2017 models? I am still tempted to return and go back to the 2015 15" maxed out specs. Last night I did have some palm rejection issues.. it almost sent an email before I was ready.. luckily it just closed it and went to Drafts.

Yeah I feel like Apple dropped the ball with the butterfly keyboard. It doesn't feel finished. Sometimes I wished I had kept my 2015 macbook pro because that keyboard was so much better.

Butterfly keyboard is too shallow for my taste. Apple is so obsessed with thinness they are starting to ruining essential parts like the keyboard.

When I first got my mbp 2017, about 4 of the keys were extremely stiff. To the point it would disrupt my typing flow as I had to hit the key a second time to register.

However since then the keys have loosen up and function like all the other keys.

But for a $1,500 laptop it's inexcusable to have those kinds of flaws.

I have about 10 days to decide. I don't want to 'look' for the issue but this thing is almost $3K and AC+ will cover it.. but even with good help from Apple it took a LOT of my time. For my purposes I am betting a 2.8/16/512 2015 15" will rock anything I need to do. I like the new design (other than the WAY TOO BIG trackpad on the 15") but it's not worth headaches. Hell, I could pick up a GoPro with the difference.

Ultimately, it is the only power you have: to buy from another company.

I had spent lots of money on the Apple ecosystem, but after a number of keyboard problems with the new models, I bought a Windows laptop. It took me a while to get used to it, and I still prefer Mac OS, but not enough to spend thousands on a machine with such a fundamental issue.

I still have an iMac, iPhone and Apple Watch, but I'm happy with my new Windows machine. Now that I've gone through the pain of partly moving to a new ecosystem, I am less likely to auto-buy any new Apple device when it comes time to replacing my current devices.

I didn't like the first gen keyboard when I first tried it in the Apple Store.

When I bought my 13" TB MBP 2 weeks ago I was unsure about the keyboard. I've fallen in love with it and haven't had any issues with specific keys as others have reported. Hopefully whatever was wrong with earlier models has been worked out. Overall I really like the tactical feedback it gives. I can do 90% of what I can do on a full size mechanical keyboard on the flat keyed MBP. Love it. I know it's not the most popular opinion but I can't say enough good things about this keyboard.

Wow, I am surprised on one level, but on another level not at all. Kudos to you for standing up and admitting that you erred in how you responded to others who felt that the keyboard has a design failure.

Never fun to be wrong. This was a VERY expensive mistake because I can't abandon Mac as it's heavily part of the film industry here in LA.

I bought new laptops and 4K monitors, wireless keyboards and so on. I spoke to my teacher friend in NY this morning and she told me how they've sent DOZENS of these machines back with keyboard failures and it's ongoing. They don't know what to do.

Last night the space bar on the unit went "flat." It still works on the left side, but the mechanical action is gone and it's obviously dirty underneath or damaged. My gear is kept clean and no one is eating saltine crackers over these.

So...they will be sent for repair and promptly sold. I will be VERY public about what happened and I will head over to the Apple Store and get them on the phone. They won't like it one bit, but this means losing money on gear and monitors and a LOT of wasted time.

Since Apple will do nothing, I will do something.

I also loved the keyboard. It takes a few months for debris and build up to start trouble. It's only a matter of time. It's funny how these things snowball. A fellow writer called me 10 minutes ago and his 13" Touchbar has the same issue, but with the N key. He's trying to figure out what to do.
I've had a discussion with Mac support about this already and the tech said this problem EXISTS. I'm sure they'll work it out, but NOT on my dime. I promised them that I will hurt them online via forums and youtube, but mainly because I hate that someone like my dad, who's 77, will be dealing with this kind of horror show.
End of story. I can't risk keeping it.

And AGAIN...my deepest apologies to the folks I bugged about complaints regarding the keyboard. I don't believe in Karma, but dang...this is a good example as I am forced to type on an external keyboard with a expensive dud of a laptop.

How long does it take for the problem to appear? I just bought my top specced model a month ago and it seems to be working fine right now. What precautions would you recommend?

It is always the circle of death set of keys. 4-8 at top row. E to I on the second. F to J on third. V to N on bottom.

My teacher friend in NY had over a 100 machines ordered (both 13" and 15" and a few of the Air models because people still love those).
From what she can gather, almost a 3rd of them are have some sort of issue. Dead or repeating keys are most common.

The only precaution I could possibly think of is to keep ALL types of food, dust and environmental elements away from the keyboard. I was pretty careful, so I don't see how many more keyboards won't see problems over time.

I couldn't tell from your original post. Are your units first get or second gen keyboards? 2016 models or 2017? Just curious.

I remember trying out the retina MacBook keyboards in 2015 at the Apple store and I was so weirded out by it. Tested it out again on the 2016 MacBook Pro and I said to myself, why does Apple think this is great? I am so happy I never waited to upgrade and got my Early 2015 when I did. If Apple doesn't make some drastic improvement or revert to the previous chassis by 2021, its probably back to Windows notebook as the successor to my MBP.

Really sorry about your situation, especially in the middle of such a major project. I don't know why the influencers who have deep access to Apple don't advocate for customers and admit the truth. Most just simply care about ensuring they get their golden ticket to the next media event so they can say they are first up with an unboxing or preview video.

Tell the truth, the keyboard is crappy, Apple can surely take it and fix the problem. The problem is Steve Jobs is not around with his secret belt to spank those who need it.

Yep. Pretty much this.

Maybe a few people will recall that I was a staunch defender of the new Touchbar machines, especially their new keyboards. For a few months it was a total love affair with my 15" and 13" units.

I'm a writer and photographer, so these things are used professionally. I also have several clients including a fellow using 4 of the 15" models for editing. So let's get to the juicy part.

BOTH keyboards have failed. And THREE out of four of my friends machines have had the same kind of issues. My friend in NY (Board of Ed) uses these machines and she says MANY of the staff units are plagued with keys that don't work, loose their "click" or double type.

In my case the B key double types and the right side of the space bar doesn't work at all-15" model. On the 13" it's the F key, also double typing. My friend has dumped ALL of the machines and wants to sue Apple, though that's not my business.

Now I know someone at Apple and this is the issue. The new keyboards cannot handle dust or debris of ANY kind. Naturally it's a matter of time before this issue will appear. Apple says they'll fix my machines and offered no other solution. I will sell them and buy an iMac. Sadly I will now replace the notebooks with Dell or something without this fatal flaw.

FYI. Discussion with Genius Bar here in LA confirmed this. In fact, as soon as they saw it they said there was nothing to do but send it to their facility because their attempts to clear out the keyboards has not worked.

5 grand worth of notebooks and they're junk. Right in the middle of a movie shoot and they tell me to buy a new one while I wait for a repair.

Goodbye to the MacBook Pro.

(and my apologies to folks who had this issue and were given short thrift by me. You guys were apparently right and I was wrong).

I have an original 12" rMB and a 2017 15" MBP. I think the keyboard on the MBP is near perfect for typing. It's a perfection from the experiment on the rMB, which has a terrible keyboard in my opinion. But my worry is still with reliability. I had the keyboard on my rMB replaced once, and now the spacebar is stuck again. I fear the same will happen with the MBP. Because these keyboards have so little movement, the slightest contamination under the keyboard will destroy them. Isn't this something Apple should have thought of?

Does anyone have/had, at now, a defect keyboard of the MBP 2017? Or are only MBP 2016 defective?

Yes two new machine had problems. One key half of it did not work after the machine was heated and then cooling down. Then after smashing it sometimes it stackS inside and come back to its position by itself. Also a speaker burned... DONT BUY MACBOOK PRO 2016 OR 2017. ITS CRAP!!

Some people can only learn "the hard way". You appear to be one of them.

I really hope Apple is taking the issues with the new MBP seriously. I have been an enthusiastic Mac-user for many years, but I won't upgrade my 2015 model until the problems have been resolved.
