Yes, I have a USB drive, that in the rare chance that I might actually need it...I will have it.

A USB drive is great and gives more space but remember the cost. It is cheap to buy one but when I need to get work from students they are going to burn on cd as it is a lot cheaper

I think it's a different story... Floppies stored 1.44MB when CDs managed over 600, and back in the day it was a change from one standard removable medium to another.

No it's the same story. With OSX Lion, Appstore, iCloud, iTunes store, etc. we're in the process of transition to digital distribution. Need to move some files around, use a USB flash drive.

It's even cheaper and probably faster too to upload stuff nowadays than to burn CDs.

not a usb key, hes talking about a usb disc drive. Completely negates any argument in favour of a disc drive in the laptop.

Drop the optical drive and give the 13 inch a proper graphics card.

I would never argue against setting in a blu ray drive in the new MBP but removing the SD leaves no proper way of getting stuff out or other stuff in.

I am a lecturer and sometimes students want to show me some work they have. Without a DVD drive I would need them to upload over the internet and that is not ideal, at least not always...

I still prefer having everything together and a couple of mms thicker. It is like having a phone and a PDA, merging them made a lot of sense

Man, I really wish that they would invent some sort of other way of porting information around and plugging it into any computer to access the files, rather than having to carry data DVDs around all the time...

If they drop the optical drive (which they probably will) and use the new Ivy Bridge technology (which runs cooler), then a thinner design (not necessarily as thin as the Macbook Air), is certainly possible, even more so if they use Macbook Air-style blade SSDs instead of HDDs (or 9.5mm HDD form factor SSD), though in the case of the latter, I hope not, as it will reduce upgrade potential. Another thing I hope they don't do with the new MBP is to get rid of user-upgradeable RAM or drop the Firewire port - both needed for a "Pro" machine IMHO.

I like the design of the current MBP personally, would be happy if they just made it a little bit thinner and used some of the space saved from removing the optical drive for a longer-lasting battery and perhaps space for a second SSD or HDD.

yea i really hope they keep the user upgradeable ram and stick an extra hdd in place of the optical drive.

i think i'm going to wait. this mbp has already last me 5 yr it can last for 1 more yr, i have replace the optical drive, and the fan myself and its still running solid. except for the 30 min battery time but i guess i can live with that for now. Hope apple does redesign next yr!

on that note, this is the first laptop that has last me more than 3 yr. I really feel i got my money's worth

I see people talking about MB's (and iPhones) needing redesigns a lot online and it seems strange to me. Why re-design something for the sake of re-designing it?

Is there something wrong with how the MacBook's look? Or do people just need to see a difference in order to believe its a new product and worthwhile buying. Hmmm.

Just my 2c.

I personally cannot see what more they can do design wise to a notebook before it stops being a notebook. Faster and thinner, is about all you can reasonably expect.

I agree too. I think my iPhone 4 is so beautiful. It looks great and feels great. Sure it would be nice to have a bigger screen but then it might not fit in my pocket. :) I think the MBP looks beautiful too. Plus if it changed it wouldn't match my iPhone 4. haha

i agree with you that the redesign just for sake of looking different than the previous design doesnt make sense, but in this case - macbook pro - by redesign i really mean (and probably many others on this thread) - no cd/dvd, maybe blade-type ssds, and probably completely different internal layout. on the outside it really doesnt matter if they change the looks or not, but if they do i think we'll see something like macbook air tapered design...
