I haven't purchased a new Mac (iMac or Laptop) in about 7 years (my iMac is from late 2010 and my MBP is from 2011-2012). My iMac is still running flawless but my MBP battery swelled up and its no longer useable - I was planning on upgrading anyway so its not so shocking that I need to drop 1-1.5k. I am going to purchase a new laptop within the next few weeks but having trouble deciding what is best for me. I planned on going to an Apple Store and talk to someone but I don't know if/when I will have time so I figured I would ask here so I can just order online and have it shipped to me.

Here are the two I am looking at:
13" Mac Book Air - Touch ID 1.6GHz Dual-Core Processor with 256GB Storage
13" Mac Book Pro - 2.3GHz Dual-Core Processor with 256GB Storage

Not quite sure (other than processor) what the difference is and what I should go for. Like I said I haven't purchased a new Mac in quite awhile nor have I done any research on them until recently. I'd love to use this thing for the next 5+ years as my "secondary" computer (I have an office PC and my home iMac for most of my projects/work, I plan to use the laptop for travel and when I want to get some work done from my couch/patio).

Thank you in advance, and if this is in the wrong section, please advise me.

The base MBP 13" will walk circles around the MBA. For $100 more than the Air, it's worth getting the MBP. Better screen, better processor, and just a better machine overall.

Go to the refurbished store and get you a Touch Bar 2018 for $50 more than the MBA with a bigger SSD and killer performance. the 4 cores will make it faster than your current desktop.

really bro you can't take one incident and apply it to all the poster in that thread got a bad product it happens most new computers come with defects. its possible to even get a brand new sealed product from the refurbished store. Any product returned is considered refurbished as apple has to re serialize the number because the warranty started upon purchase.
