I think it really does come down to portability first. If you want a machine you can take with you, then go for a MacBook Pro, since you have the cash for that.
If you don't need the portability, then get a desktop machine with a real keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
As others have said, a Mac Pro sounds like overkill when compared to an iMac. Since you have the cash to spend, get a fully loaded 24" iMac with the fastest cpu, biggest/fastest disk and as much RAM as will fit, and you will have an awesome machine - and one that will look awesome in your room.
If you just have to get the Mac Pro, at least get a cinema display to go with it. Why spend $3,500 on a computer like the Mac Pro, and then get a mis-matched Dell monitor? I know the Cinema displays are a bit over priced (LOL), but cost does not seem to be an issue here...
