Just make sure you are super careful and follow the ifixit.com guide and take your time. I even had different ziplock bags for the different screws and labeled them as to not get them mixed up. The HDD (unless you have done this before) is not a "simple and quick" procedure, but isn't horrid either.

Thanks. This is the guide that I found on ifixit. Did I choose the correct MacBook Pro model? How I can tell whether I have an A1211, A1226, or A1260?

And for RAM, I was just going to use the guide from Apple support. Is the ifixit one better?

Okay, so the correct HD and RAM have both arrived, I've looked at the ifixit guides (and will soon watch the OWC videos), and think that I'm ready to do this. I just wanted to check with you all again to make sure my plan makes sense. And again, I apologize if this is elementary -- never done this before.

1) Back up current HD (just let Time Machine run as normal) onto my external HD.
2) Open the computer and replace HD.
3) With computer still open, replace RAM. Close computer.
4) Install OSX on the new HD from a CD.
5) Once OSX is installed, load from my Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant.

Sound good? Any tips? Appreciate the advice, thanks.

That is pretty much it. At the end of the install (also called Setup Assistant), it will ask if you want to transfer any data from a TM backup. Select yes and select your ext HD and let it do its magics.

Okay, so I installed everything (4 GB RAM and a new 320 GB HDD) correctly, and the performance is only marginally better, if that. The computer still is having trouble with multiple -- and I mean 4-5, not 400-500 -- Safari tabs (and on some sites, like Amazon and SI.com, struggles with one after a few minutes), and will only load one or two webpages when MS Word is open. Very frustrating.

Thoughts? I'm willing to try other avenues before buying a new machine.
