So could I use the name/university of a friend from Michigan and have the MBP delivered to where I'm staying in California?

Yes you CAN, but you MAY NOT if you wish to avoid the potential wrath of Apple (see my reply 3 posts above).

But how would I be breaking the terms and conditions? Surely anyone who studies in one state should be able to order a product in a different state?

What if my friend was a resident in CA but lived in MI during the semester and ordered the MBP whilst at home in CA for summer vacation?

And - if I do use my friend's name to order online, can I have it delivered in my name or in the name of the family I am staying with in California?

And I don't think this question was answered before when I asked it - if (after buying in the name of my friend) I need to get something repaired back in England, will my local Apple store repair it if I take it to them and not the person under whose name it was bought in (my friend)?

But how would I be breaking the terms and conditions?

From the terms and conditions:

Eligibility

Those eligible to purchase from the Apple Store for Education Individuals include faculty, staff, students and parents as follows:

...

Higher Education - Faculty and staff of Higher Education institutions; and students attending, or accepted into a Higher Education institution are eligible to purchase. Purchases from the Apple Store for Education Individuals are not for institutional purchase or resale.
