Yes. You could put the operating system, data, and software on the hybrid drive and then use the 1 TB as a backup in the SuperDrive bay, enclosure, or your router. It is not a good idea to have that be your only backup though because if the machine gets destroyed or lost then your backup goes with the machine defeating the purpose.

So along with the 2 hard drive had a separate external drive that is a backup as well?

Regards!

I wonder if the Black2 would work as a second drive.

Not without a lot of work to configure it. That drive is actually a 120GB SSD and two 500GB hard drive platters all inside the same enclosure. It can only be configured using the Windows software that comes with it and it needs to be on the internal Windows machine sata bus to do this. After you have done that, it can be removed from the internal Windows install then installed in a Mac and reformatted and used.

You can read how it works a bit at the original Anandtech review here then the updated review here.

There was some discussion of this drive in a thread here and from that thread a blog post from one users ordeal getting it to work on a Mac here.

A good backup plan should include an onsite local backup that is good in case the Mac is damaged and an offsite backup in case something happens to your house.

Yea I hear ya! I have an old external I don't use much, but that sucker has been pretty darn slow lately. I might invest in an airport extreme or a thunder bolt drive to do daily back ups of everything.

Regards!

An AirPort Extreme can have a USB drive added to the back for Time Machine support. The Time Capsule includes an integrated hard drive.

Got my new HD in the mail today HERE computer is running better than ever! The upgrade from 5400 to 7200 is noticeable. Not like night and day as I would think it'd still defiantly be faster using a SSD. But it's nice to know that it's all in working order now. I was getting a few spinning wheels felt my heart drop, then realized my MBP was indexing ;D But as of right now it's up and running and I'm happy! Thanks all for your help! I'll also be taking look at the WD Black2 as the main drive and use this new one I got in here now as the secondary replacing the super drive. :)

Regards!

Glad to hear the new drive is working well and that you are investigating a good backup solution...
