i wouldn't get my partner a computer. it's too personal, sort of like buying a car, and something that really needs to be discussed. an ipad? maybe. an ipod? maybe. but, definitely not a computer.

As the above poster said, depends on how tech savvy it is. Would you want somebody consulting you for every decision they made in your behalf? Of course not, that's why we have a government that has layers of rank. We can't simply ask the public for every decision as they are not knowledgeable for every topic.

Same here. Sometimes the person just doesn't know enough. I, for one, want a motorcycle. Am I just going to go pick one out? Heck no, I'm going to read forums for a week at least and then ask opinions of every person I see riding one and my friends who are serious about riding dirt bikes as well.

Seeing as it's a present though, I would still rather tell somebody I like a street bike (ninja or whatever) and have them pick the best for me IF I could not pick for myself.

Depends how tech savvy she is. In my experience, less tech savvy people wouldnt care if you bought them a computer because they dont even know what they want in the first place. People who know computers better are more picky because they know what they can get and should have gotten.

Bingo!

She isn't tech savvy... She uses her computer to browse facebook, and nursing forums. She is in grad school for Anaesthesiology, and her testing is switching to electronic. The 17" is a bear to carry around, and possibly not as reliable (battery wise), for her to rely on it for a test. Hence why the iPad isn't going to fly (believe me, I thought of just getting her that!)

Great feedback! Thanks all!

Oh, she loves her Mac... Just not the size! That is why I am looking at a smaller form factor!

The 17" was a hand-me-down from me! ;)

Just get her an Air and be done with it.

If she's not tech savvy, she wouldn't be able to tell the difference if it was staring her in the face.

This is a non-issue. It seems either computer will meet her needs. Why then are you racking your head over a purchase?

Take her to the store ask her about her opinion then have them wrap up the one she likes best hand her the bag and go have dinner!
