So in other words, he has to do whatever his teenager daughter wants him to do?

I guess so. My family values are, "If you want something, you gotta buy it with your own money." But since I'm off to college in a year, I'm gonna get some help with a MBP, finance- wise. I'm already going to Japan this summer and having to buy my own car.

There's nothing wrong with helping out (or even buying it for your children) but she seems to be pushing her luck (she wants it NOW and it has to be a mbp).

Maybe I come off as a bit callous, but unless she's paying for it, who's she to say when or what type of computer should be bought?

If we consider the fact that the iPod rebate that starts in June, and the fact that the mbps still need an update, why does she need it now?

Because she wants it?

That's what I believe. Many of my friends who are seniors as well have gotten their laptops a year prior to college, just to play with it before its off to use for work.

It's one of those moments where you just gotta have your toy before it's work time! lol

And as long as we're sniping at one another, the plural of an acronym/abbreviation does not require an apostrophe, i.e., MBPs is the correct form.

Sweet! I'm danish, and I have always wondered how that worked in english. :)

I understand wanting it before you start college (she could get it in June and still have 3 months to play with it before classes start!), but this is a bit early (it'll be one rev older by the time she gets to college), and she's missing out on $200 of an iPod.

All signs point to: wait. :p :)
I think you completely missed the point buddy....
No, I want to know why she (not the OP, his daughter) needs this notebook right away.

If he can convince her to hold on a few more months, they'll both be better off in the end.
i don't want you as my daddy
Noted, but let's try to keep it on topic shall we? :)
It's a bit harsh to criticize the man's parenting skills when he's told us he's leaving out the personal details, obviously for the sake of brevity and relevance to this forum.

I'm not criticizing him at all. There might be a reason why she needs it earlier, but it she doesn't then it just makes more sense to wait.

As the OP said initially, she's been without a computer since last summer. I infer that she's using his computer then to check email, do whatever college girls do with computers. She doesn't suddenly need a computer tomorrow. She's been waiting for 8 months for something that apparently she wants / needs.

I won't retell my whole story here, just briefly recap the main points. I made a pact with my college bound daughter that the latest we will wait for the updated MBP is February 26th (I know school is still 6 months away, but she's been without her own computer since summer, so yeah, another month or two waiting for the MBP update is something neither one of us relishes).

As for why the MBP -- it certainly is puzzling why a parent would buy their kid what the kid wants. Who could imagine such a thing?

She's not in college yet; she's still a high school senior.

I wanted a sports car in high school, doesn't mean I got one.

Whatever, maybe I was just raised differently.

I still think the OP should wait it out for the fact that he'd get an upgraded machine and a $200 rebate on a new iPod.

To those critical of my daughter -- you don't know her. She has been a great child from day one. She just turned 18 in January and this was supposed to be her present. She did not get anything else. She is an excellent student (top 5% in her class), despite working part time. Lastly, I made a promise, and I'm going to keep it. So please, keep you advice on parenting to yourselves. This is not the place for such discussions.

Don't worry; most folks here are able to put themselves in your (and her) position, and support your commitment to your daughter. Personally, I'd get her the MBP regardless of whether or not there's an update on Tuesday. As I've said before, I don't think there will be an update until late spring/early summer. Unless you and she are prepared to wait that long, it might be better to go with a machine already on the market. Alternatively, you could purchase a refurbished machine now, give it to her, and replace it with a brand new MBP when the update arrives.

You can buy longer

See, I knew it came out wrong.

I didn't mean to say anything in that sense.

If she's happy with the current mbps, get her one after next Tuesday.

Just remind her that she'll lose the iPod rebate (if she cares).

hmmm... can i add more confusion before tues?:D
i think she'll do well with an MBA...
it's hip! it's perfect for someone on the go!
for surfing the net, doing papers, presentation etc, the MBA will suffice..
she's not planning to use final cut right?

i mean, if i have to think like a senior.. hmmmm i'd probably want the newest/ shiniest and the brightest.. ( no offense!)
and it will be cheaper than the 8-9 month old MBP
i'd go for the one that will generate more " WOW!" among my peers.. :D:D

Naaa i dont think the MBA is right for her, we minus well go oldschool and get a MP with a 23"ACD. Its very powerful and portable, its weight is way overrated. She'll definetly be the talk of the class with a huge 23" ACD on her desk.

i think you missed the whole thing about HD size. the MBA will definitely fall short in that department.

One more thing to keep track of in the dorm room.

Lol well I can say this much everyone here are recommending ACD I presume an Apple LCD, which are overpriced and definitely not worth the money, Id wait another 1-2 weeks, if an update comes out Id get a 15" model an perhaps with a 24" DELL LCD which are pretty good especially if you catch them on sale instead of paying 600+ you get it for 500+, better quality and much cheaper than Apple. Also I suggest you check out this link

Yes you can, but it will void your warranty unless done by an authorised repair shop.

Well, you know the standard answer to this. No, it doesn't void your warranty. It only voids it if you damage something in the process.
