so i have a boatload of extra Amazon GCs sitting in my account...

anyone buy one from there? any recommendations for which one i should buy...early 2011 MacBook Pro 13-inch...

thanks in advance

The optibay I bought for $20 is secured to the chassic by three screws. It's not "sliding around." And two more screws ain't making a difference.

care to point me to the one you bought for $20. I want to put it on my macbook pro. I currently have a 256 SSD there and would like to add a second 256SSD on the optibay. Thank you in advance.

I just ordered this one to hold my factory HDD. Crucial M4 going into the factory spot.

Haven't received it yet, so I can't comment on quality. I'm fully prepared to elongate the holes if necessary to make this thing work and bolt in fully. I'll TIG weld new brackets if needed to stop any movement.

let me know...because at one point it lists the model number...then later on it specifically says: "It does not fit early 2011 Macbook Pro 13""

help

So i just bought a 120gb SSD and a optical bay enclosure that i installed into my early 2011 MBP. I also bought a optical drive external usb enclosure. I was hoping that I could use bootcamp to install Windows 7 onto the SSD but when i go through the bootcamp menu and my laptop restarts im stuck with a blank black screen. Ive also tried using bootcamp to create a bootable USB (which i had to do a work around to get to work because it supposed to only work for MBA) that didnt work. Can anyone help?

thank u just ordered this one to add a second SSD tp my late 2011 MBP

does a second SSD work well in the late 2011 MBP ?

coz i've read that SSD should installed only instead of HDD, not superdrive

is this fixed now ?

or there is no issue at all ?

i already have a SSD instead of stock HDD, and considering dumping the SD to put a second SSD instead

Didn't realize this was an issue. Based on what I read it was either add an ssd drive or hdd. We'll see.

many friends bought chinese optibay on ebay, of course it's cheap

but the quality is also cheap

- 5 of them had to cut the enclosure to have it inserted in the MBP
- 1 of them died after 2 months

i think i'm gonna go for the data doubler from OWC,

pricing is fair, quality is excellent

my $2000 MBP and my $300 SSD deserve better than a 20$ crap bought on ebay made in China that is just a bad copy of an optibay

I can see where some might think it might need to be cut as the two screw tabs in front stick out and wont let you drop the bay straight in but they don't need to be cut.

The cable connector lifts straight up off the main board, you have to take it off and put it on the drive bay before you install it. Then you can insert the front of the bay into the side of the laptop slots so you can line up the two front screws, then the back can drop straight down into the laptop.

It is a bit of a puzzle and I don't doubt there are many that don't fit somehow, that's why I linked to the one specific seller. The market is flooded with these adaptors.

On a side note it appears the fall sensor still works when there is a spinning disk in the media bay, don't know if that was mentioned.

can someone verify that I can do two ssd's. I am keeping the original 256SSD toshiba that came with it and I am adding a second one to the optibay from the same manufacture Toshiba.

Are there any other SSD drives that are recommended? I heard some issues with the M4 etc.

Thank you.

I got it installed and working great. I do have a 2010 15" though. Not sure what could change to fit the newer but I have seen that warning on other ones.

Dayum, 65 pages on this topic. I'm sure my questions are answered in there somewhere.

I've got a late 2009 MacBook Pro 15" 5,3.

Currently got a 500GB internal HDD - standard.

Just ordered a 750GB Hitachi 7200RPM HDD and a 240GB OWC SSD. I want to run the SSD in the optical bay holder running the a fresh OSX install and then migrate all my apps to the SSD. I then want to use the HDD for storage and working space.

What's the easiest way to do a fresh OSX install onto the SSD, then the easiest way to get my current apps off the HDD onto the SSD without reloading them and tracking down serials? I also want to make sure I get all preferences folders, like itunes playlists, calendar appointments, web favourites folders, LR cache, catalog and presets etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Backup with Time Machine. Install OSX on the SSD. Restore with Time Machine.

Already backed up with TM externally.

Can I selectively restore Apps to the SSD with TM and then other data to the HDD? All program preferences will come with the TM restore I take it?

----------

Also what's the easiest way to do a fresh OSX install onto the SSD, I'm getting an external enclosure with the HDD, will the SSD fit in there? If it does how do I do the OSX install to that drive? Noob question, thanks again!

Just want to say I did this on a late 2011 15" and it is perfect right down to the two screw locations in front where the disc slot is, plus the two screw holes in back to mount the rear mounting bracket. I was expecting it to need a little work according to the comments but it was a completely perfect fit and still under $20.

Thanks for the suggestion! This was the type of comment I was looking for. Hopefully it fits like you said it does. I have the early 15' MBP though.

I've been doing a lot of research on this lately as I just got a 256 GB Samsung 830 SSD. One thing you should know is that if you bought a SATAIII (6.0) SSD then you DO NOT want to put that in the optical bay. If you got a SATAII(3.0) SSD then you can use that as the boot drive in the optical bay. I found a few nice writeups that do a good job of telling you how to set up the dual drives.

If you want to split up your home folder between the SSD and the HDD you will need to have a bit of familiarity with the Terminal, as you will need to make some symlinks. Check out the comments as well, there is some good stuff in there. If you want to enable TRIM on your SSD, this page explains it quite well (again, read the comments): http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I've purchased this SSD and it comes with the optical bay holder, says it's compatible with my Macbook Pro and it's just regular SATA by the looks.

I haven't read your links yet, but I will.

I'm a photographer and most of my HDD space is photos which I keep in a folder on the Desktop. So ideally I'd keep everything except my Desktop folder on the SSD then have the "Desktop" folder on the HDD.

Easiest way to install a fresh copy of OSX on the SSD? SSD in enclosure that comes with HDD, install disk in optical drive, run install disk and install to SSD in external enclosure?

Does the migrate function allow you to select/deselect individual apps to migrate? Or only folders?

You are right about the it being contradicting. It mentions MB724LL/A which is the early 2011 13" but it says it does not fight the early 2011.
