Isn't this effectively a similar leap as we saw from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4, just that it doesn't have a notably different chassis? That seemed like a pretty major upgrade to me, and the iPhone 4 was hailed as revolutionary.

Very true.

Retina display is over hyped really.

Chances are it will feature on the next few models anyway. People forget the screen on Ipad 2 is already fantastic.

I remember Ipad 1 users saying Ipad 2 was a small change due to no retina.

Honestly, I think this is something you can't knock until you try it. That's the highest resolution screen on a device that size, ever.

I show and take lots of photos on my iPad too, but the better screen isn't worth the cost of selling this iPad and paying the difference.

The upgrades would slightly benefit me but not enough to warrant an upgrade.

just for clarification, I use my iPad1 to showcase my images i.e. i use it as my portfolio for my photography.
so the screen is ALL the reason for me to upgrade from 1 to 3

In my opinion this is a mediocre upgrade. I say this because there's nothing wrong with the screen on the current iPad, and it's also fast enough for those of us who don't play CPU intensive games.

4G is not out yet in the uk, so that's not really a benefit.

And the iPad is really only useful, IMO, for quick snaps, so doesn't need a decent camera.

I'm so pleased I'm not even tempted to fork out for a new device already. I will be happy with my iPad 2 until the next one comes along :D

Anyone else feel the same?

In fact, the device I was more excited about is the new apple tv! I've only held off so far because it didn't support 1080p. I'll be buying the new one very soon :D

I agree with you, completely! They did what they could have done with ipad 2. Its a marginal upgrade, nothing overwhelming. Apple, please get rid of "amazing" at least try to :p

Apple doesn't intend on having iPad 2 owners buying the new iPad, it's an awesome tablet for someone who does not yet have one. With this retina display and the new apps it stomps on ALL other tablets available.

This shoud help keep professionals looking at tablets interested in the iPad over windows 8 tablets.

I'm very torn on the new iPad. On one hand, I've been waiting on a better screen on the iPad forever - the current resolution just doesn't cut it for reading books or browsing, and like many other people said, having an iPhone 4 next to an iPad 2 is all the proof you need.

On the other hand, that's the only real upgrade. 4G and better rear camera are nice, but I would rather take longer battery life or lighter weight over 4G any day, and I would venture to say that to most people a better camera is pointless - that's what the phone is for!

In fact, the new iPad is a step back from a usability perspective as compared to iPad 2 on few items - heavier, battery thats almost twice the size so it will take forever to charge, same storage options even though everything will take up more space (so you either have to spend another $100 or if you were running out of space on 64Gb, too bad...). Couple that with the few unknowns - does the new iPad have the horsepower to run the new screen as fast/faster than iPad 2? I don't care about specs here or gaming performance - I want the same speedy interface and fast web page loading/scrolling/zooming, etc.

All in all, definitely not a revolutionary update by the virtue of the resolution itself. Still the best tablet on the market of course, I just don't see myself selling my 16Gb 3G iPad 2 for $400 or so and spending another $330 to get an equivalent - 32Gb 4G.

Yeah. I have zero reason to upgrade from my ipad2.
And those people saying the ipad2 doesn't cut it for browsing teh web or reading books, need to have their eyes checked.

Yes, just like the HD TV crap. Everybody that thinks they need the crazy 1080p needs a new set of glasses, obviously SD is all we will ever need. And don't even get me started on those crazy new iPhone with Retina display - life was so much better with 320x480.

Nope.
It's not a necessity. When most of the crap on the net is nowhere near HD.
it's a cool gimmick. But I'll definitely wait for the the iPad 4

Apple thinks 'the new iPad' is the perfect iPad. It's really appealing to people who don't have one.

This is like the Grand Daddy of tablets. Not edgy at all, more classic.

Its just a repeat of the 4S. People are calling it mediocre because it looks the same.

That and silly people feel they must upgrade on an annual basis. The device they already own should work perfectly fine, and there seems to be a disconnect in comprehension here. They release X features this year, but you don't know what is going on in their labs. They might have tons of R&D that's in progress, and there is no reason to rush it to market in an unfinished state if they feel they can package enough features to release an annual update. I realize that a lot of users hand off the old devices to family members and gradually cycle them down, but some of the expectations by Apple fans are just weird.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

So the upgrade is basically just for the retina display save for the camera, nothing else really changed?

If I had the extra money I'd get it but am low on funds and saving my money for new iMac...so I'm getting iPad 2 refurb

Am I the only one pissed they made it a decent amount thicker? Other than that i'm happy and will be buying my 1st iPad.

I think Apple has done again what Apple does best - create a great product, then with each generation update it just enough for a lot of people to upgrade, but not enough for those people to keep it too long. They should teach Apple strategy at school, it is ingenious.

I wouldn't say their expectations are weird. Siri-ously (LOL) it is that much to ask for full the full siri? Nope they give you a bit of it that can work offline and leave it at that. In my mind if siri was funny integrated into iOS so you can do something you can't with the touch interface, that would have been a feature worthy of the "magical" or "insanely great" stamp. Instead this (and in general how useless siri has been on the iphone) is like a kid with ADD handing in the bare minimum homework to get by.

People laugh at Samsung's pen on the Galaxy Note. Frankly if I was to ditch the ipad 1 for a new tablet right now it would be the Galaxy Note 10.1. Cause that pen's actually going to be a new feature I'd use.

It is only 3/100 of in inch thicker according to the specs I have found - don't think that little increase will be a problem. I worry more about weight - but I am excited as I have just ordered my first ipad -

Mediocre? Over what? The iPad 1 or 2? Do most people really switch tablets ever year? I've always replaced my iPhone every 2 years.

Way better update than iPad 1 to 2. I felt like the iPad 1 was fast enough, but the screen has always been a little low res, especially after staring at the iPhone 4 all day.

So this thing feels like the perfect update over my iPad 1.

Still, though, almost every single spec on the thing has been doubled excluding size. What would be a better than mediocre update to you guys? I can now SVN into my Mac Pro with a 23 inch screen and have way more than enough pixels left over, or draw with far better pixel accuracy. To me, that's an incredible update.

Retina display is HUGE!

For me, this is a HUGE upgrade. This is the iPad I've been waiting for since it's first release. Retina display, baby!

I don't care much for gaming, but I care about reading! So the super high resolution retina display, for me at least, probably makes this the most incredible electronic device ever.

I never liked reading on my iPad 1 and 2 because honestly, the displays were pretty bad, resolution wise, and text did not render very well. Even my 5 year old Macbook Pro has a higher PPI, as do my desktop monitors.

Now that the iPad joins the iPhone with an incredible retina display, I will probably do more reading, browsing etc. on the iPad than on my desktop/laptop.

Now a retina display can't come fast enough for the Macbooks, iMacs and Cinema Displays!

I have been holding out for the exact same reason. I can't begin to imagine home amazing my portfolio will look on the iPad Retina Display.

If you have an original iPad like I do this is a huge upgrade. Cameras, 4x as much ram (Safari crashes a lot now with iOS 5) and the graphics are (according to MacLife) 36 times faster than the original iPad. That is huge.

I missed that they didn't add that apparently. I would have thought a fully functional siri was a given. Perhaps they'll update it with IOS later, but you never know with Apple. Pens can be great on a tablet interface for things like writing where fingertips can be a bit awkward (and my fingers aren't even large). Wacom has done this for many years. When people reference the previous lack of a mass tablet market, there seems to be a stigma placed on the use of a stylus when it's really much more comfortable for some stuff assuming a well designed implementation. I guess part of that was my ignorance this time around in the case of Siri.
