I've removed the memberlist as I suspected that that might be what was causing some slowdowns. It maybe that bots were crawling it at too fast a rate. But I removed it for now to see if that helps things.

Is there a way to make it so it cannot be viewed unless you are registered? Maybe even with a few posts under the member's belt? (like with the PMing thing) I think that would be nicer anyway, internet snoops and all.

:)

Oh noes! How will I know if my post count is catching iBlue's (she was the member with the next highest post count last time I looked) or not?

How are we supposed to stalk members now? :D

Can you deny guests and bots permission to view the memberlist?

since i know that i've used the Memebers List in the past and have found it helpful i would like to see something like this perhaps, since its a useful tool.

Maybe people could post alternatives here?

Like right clicking on the member's name in posts.

I have to admit though, that I enjoyed watching my user name go up on the list as my post count climbed.:D

Edit: It does seem to be faster. I'm willing to give up the list for speed any day.

I don't get what you mean by internet snoops. This is a public forum and what you post is visible to all. How does the member's list relate to that?

Just curious how the member list can slow the site down, isn't it still tallying the numbers in the background after being taken away?

if profiles and the memberlist are hidden to all but registered users it does give you some more privacy in that people can search for your latest posts/threads via the profile or easily find out if you're online/what you're reading. yes i know this is able to be disabled elsewhere, but it does help make things a bit harder to dig through, no?

I'm guessing it's not the member list per se, it's the bots crawling it to weasel their way into our sensitive parts for various purposes.

Is it possible to block all sensitive material to outsiders. Only allow profiles to be viewed by registered users.

But anyone can register in a few seconds with phony information and a throwaway email account. I just don't see the point.

it's a combination of factors.

we have a larger membership list than most forums so it took a while to generate the list - and the list is generated each time the page is loaded. It would end up locking the db, so that other requests would have to wait.

compounded by the fact that search engine bots were hitting it frequently, it is what I believe to be the reason the site would get very slow for random periods of time.

we can bring it back in a variety of ways, including caching the results, blocking bots.... we'll look into it. but I do think it helped, and things are moving faster since it's removal.

I don't like having the Forum Spy link shifted to the left. :(

I didn't use the list much, but I liked having it available

And yeah, the shifted link takes some getting used to

Perhaps make memberlist available to members with over 50 posts? Of course a new group would have to be created...
