I have 3 regular bags.

I have an InCase slim/narrow backpack. Rather than an ugly shapeless thing on your back, this backpack keeps its shape and looks square-ish It is like a briefcase on your back, except it has lots of pockets and little areas to stash your stuff. I love mine. :)

I have a small canvas bag (olive green), which is great. I couldn't find a photo on the internet, but it's really useful. It's small, but big enough to carry a water bottle, quick-dry towel and swimmers (like Speedos, I guess), goggles, deodorant and hair product, a textbook or notes, and a few other things. Did I mention that it's small? ;)

I also have a olive green twill briefcase with brown leather pockets and accents. It looks fantastic, and I love it. :) Olive green and brown look similar, so it doesn't photograph well. However, when I go to work on the tram, I swear that every 10 guys who see my bag take a good long stare at it.

no man purse for me.

if i need to carry something i would wear one of those backpacks that just have the loose strings around the shoulders..etc.

When I was in 7th grade, I bought a blue JanSport bag. That was 1992. Today, I carry to work a blue JanSport bag that I bought in 1992. The little tag even has Made in U.S.A. on it (I guess the new bags are made elsewhere).

It has been sent in once to replace zipper on the main compartment. I'll probably hand it down to one of my kids/grandkids when I retire in 30 years.

I carry around my good old Jansport a lot of the time. It's not particularly tiny but after nearly 8 years (most of high school and just about all of college) of abuse (books, computer stuff, and clothes being stuffed in then literally thrown around) the only problems with it are one zipper that only closes about 3/4 of the way and a few places in the bottom where the material is starting to wear through. It's awesome.

Shoulder bag / messenger bag is garbage. Worst invention ever. Bad for your back, uncomfortable to wear, not secure for storing expensive electronics. Ugh, just utterly awful in every conceivable way. Never mind the fact that it's a glorified man-purse.

A backpack is the only way to go. You can comfortable and safely carry heavy loads with it for long periods of time, it isn't going to fall off your back, and you won't look like some kind of hipster doofus wearing it.

Swissgear and Ogio are my two fav's. (I have an Ogio). They're not inexpensive, but the build quality is impeccable, and the design is perfect. My ogio has a padded laptop compartment built in.

I agree. My "everyday" bag is a Northface "Flight Series" Angstrom 30 lightweight backpack with 'back saver' technology that allows for maximum comfort throughout the day. The bag looks cool as hell and fits my 13" MBP with sleeve, along with books, notebooks, a power adapter, headphones, water bottle, etc. without feeling too heavy or uncomfortable.

Full disclosure here - I have to admit that I'm also looking for a decent leather messenger bag to carry around when dressed more formally (ie. shirt & tie, and/or suit). Basically, I'm looking for a briefcase alternative that's more professional than a backpack when going to work or giving a presentation, etc. I think variety is important, and both bags serve different purposes.

What would you do if wearing a suit, though?

That's an excellent point. And I don't know what I would do. Find some kind of laptop briefcase I would imagine? I don't wear a suit every day, so for me personally, an "everyday bag" did not include a suit as part of the equation.

JanSports are great. In college, one of my friends had one he had carried since about 8th or 9th grade. The bottom finally gave out in it, so he called them to check on that warranty. They gave him a brand new bag in replacement. I still have mine from college and I sometimes use it for overnight trips.

That's probably what I'll do, that's exactly what's happening to mine.

Why don’t you take a look at the Glide backpack (http://www.briggs-riley.com/category/productDetail.aspx?id=Glide-Backpack_VB414) from Briggs and Riley? It looks pretty streamlined. The backpack has a computer sleeve to accommodate 15” laptop screens, but your 13” laptop should also fit in nicely. Besides, it has lots of pockets to carry all your essentials like pens, power cords, mouse, flash sticks, files, etc. It looks casual, sleek, yet extremely functional.

I've a Dakine rucksack which doubles as an all in one for whenever I'm out with my camera etc. Trouble is, the Mrs tends to load it up when I have it :(
