top menu bar suddenly turned black

Go into System Preferences -> Displays - and I barely touched the brightness bar before the menu lit up white again. (No need to reboot or change permissions or repair stuff as I had read, but Force Quitting and rebooting are good ideas in general. External drivers though not the problem this time sometimes freeze the computer and turning them off for a moment can also solve the most random of issues, so that's a good general fix too.)
 
drag your cursor all the way to the very upper right of your screen and click the blue box with the two arrows in it that are pointing at each other.

When i do this, the page get really small to the point where its hard to see. i don't know what to do
