why doesent some docks, other accessories charge the iphone 3g?

i remember this happened with the first iphone and they came out with an update that fixed it. is the iphone 3g going to stay incompatable with all these devices or will them come out with an update that will let it charge off of the accessories that work with the original iphone

DO NOT even try it.. the iphone 3G uses only 5volts of power to power the battery, but the iphone 2G (and newer ipods) uses 12volts. using ANYTHING made for an ipod or iphone 2G WILL fry your phone.. do NOT bypass the little warning onthe iphone 3G - you CAN bypass the warning on the 2G because the voltage is the same, but the amperage is different - which measn that it will still power it without frying it..

moral of the story, DO NOT USE ANYTHING TO CHARGE YOUR 3G UNLESS IT IS SPECIFIC TO THE 3G - including FM transmitters, because those draw power.

Actually the iPhone 3G does not have the firewire pin connected, thus nothing will blow up. It just won't charge via the higher volt input because IT IS NOT CONNECTED.

All functions will work, just not charging, for those docks that use the firewire pin to charge.

well i have a griffin fm transmitter and it says charging is no supported with this device. it doesent try to charge it can i just use it as a transmitter. also my friend who has a 3g who just got a charger from griffin and it works. but doesent say 3g on it, should he stop using it?
thanks

in my opinion, i would not use it. even if the firewire pin is not connected, the cable is not limiting the voltage coming through.. which could result in eventaul overload. I wasnt saying the phone will instantly blow up, but in a few weeks/months you will probably have issues/

Errr, if the pin is *NOT CONNECTED* how can you overload the phone? You mean the voltage and current will fall off the firewire pin and land on the USB pin? Just shake it every few monutes, that way it will fall out of the phone and not land in the wrong place. Just don't let it fall on the carpet, it might cause a virtual fire.

Its not going to do anything except tell you that its can not charge your iPhone do you think apple would be stupid enough to leave it so you can charge your phone with the wrong voltage no. It just wont charge your phone if you plug it in and it says not charging then the power is coming from the firewire port if it says that you should enable airplane mode then its charging the phone...

That does not work with the iPhone

I think this is why they got rid of the recessed headphone jack. The recess was filling up with spare voltages and could make the phone overheat.

With the new headphone jack, there is less room and the voltages just spill out of the phone.

I am very cautious about thous though and so whenever I go outside I tip my 3G upside down so the unnecessary voltages are emptied. But not if it's raining. That would be dangerous.

This is a non-issue. Just make sure you always hold your iPhone upright so you don't spill any voltages and top it off with voltages when you get a chance.

One more update.

Klipsch says the iGroove will also charge and play the iPhone 3G

(BTW - yes gtg = good to go. sorry for the lingo)

Just looked at Klipsch iGroove website and it says it does not charge the iPhone 3G. Anyone test this?

I have an iGo charger set in my car and I can say it charges all my Apple accessories fine. Thank Buddha.

But it's just utter bs that I have to plug/unplug my sync cable to charge/sync my iPhone 3G. I'm not about shell out $30 bux for a freakin' dock. ugh.

Does anyone know where I can get a really long USB cable to charge my iPhone 3G? The one that came with it is only like 3 feet and I need something that is probably 6-8 feet since I sleep on the top bunk of a bunk bed. I'd prefer something that's from Apple but I'll take a 3rd party brand if there isn't anything else. Anybody know where I can get something like this?

You could just get a USB extension cable and use the cable that came with your iPhone. You should be able to get one from any electronics store like Best Buy.

You could also use an regular power extension cord, to get the power closer to you...
