on the plus side there seems to be a good amount of activity on these forums :p

I guess I'll give this forum some time, and try to add knowledge at the same time

are there any other iPhone forums that you would recommend ?

a bit of history

- palm IIIC in high school
- computer technician for 4 years
- 3 Sony ericssons
- needed a PDA for medical school
- found out Epocrates runs on the Iphone

and that's why I'm here :D

Yeah Shenaniganz, just stick around for awhile. This is an awesome forum to come to. The people who frequent here are great and very helpful. If it wasn't for the people here I would still be lost in the sea of windows. Good luck on med school by the way.

Hi i just joined these forums today and to put it simply, im disturbed by the lack of common sense/knowldege of this community

Could it be the fact that this is a well known forum that attracts this kind of person ?

Searching through the Iphone forum archives there's just a ton of... well idiotic/whining/shady questions being asked

Welcome to the internets.

However, I find it disturbing that this is how you introduce yourself.
Ironic - whining about the whiners.

well it's not whining... If you walked in to a room that smelled bad would it be whining to say out loud "Boy it smells in here"

I think my point is further supported by the members who share my sentiments

Thanks savanahrose :D

In any case there are people here that show a pretty high level of knowledge as well.

I am coming from a Sony Ericsson community as my baseline btw.

The iPhoen section isn't the best tbh. The other sections are much better in general. Just pointing out a self evident problem doesn't necessarily help though. Trying to help the mods and users usually does.

Hence the reason this site exists.
;)

Wow, someone must really be annoyed in order to keep a site with no ads that simply dictates there's only one speaker xD.

I think that the key is to learn how to navigate around MacRumors to get the information that you need.

Search is your friend. :)

True. But I find search not my friends. Search wants to drive me insane. No offense, but I find vBulletin's search very difficult (btw, this is not talking about one speaker or cost or something...I'm talking about more complex stuff).

Maybe its just me, but it seems there is alot of hostility on these iPhone forums. Some of the threads go from a simple question to borderline calling each other out back to fight.

Not sure where this is coming from, but we have the greatest phone on earth, now group hug and lets all just get along.:)

When the same question gets asked time and time and time again do you expect anything but frustration and hostility? Not really. A bulk of the internet savvy group should know how to search yet they don't.

You should see a Google search at the bottom of the pop-up box when you click on the search icon. You can also of course search the entire internet using Google, or you can search macrumors using Google by adding site:macrumors.com or site:forums.macrumors.com to your Google search string....

Honestly,

I think it's the sheer fact that with the iPhone's lower cost of entry and, arguably, 'higher' social awareness that it attracts the less 'inclined' people to the device and to discussions surrounding the device.

I don't know about you, but the folks on the Mac forums are much more different than the folks on the iPhone forums. Myself included.

I have an iPhone, but I rarely post or read in the iPhone forums anymore. If I really need something I'll search.

Why all the whining ????

I know most will react negatively to this post as they 'have their reasons' but I am sick of people whining about how crappy and useless and why have it and yada, yada, yada about the 3G. I had the first iphone and now the 3g and still think it is a marvel of modern technology. Yesterday I was updating a program through app store and my phone reset on its own and stayed on the apple logo. It stayed that way for about a half an hour and I even tried to reformat it through Itunes and wa unable as there was a sync error. As it turned out it just took some time to reset(not sure why). Anyways I was worried but what are ya going to do.
All these complainers who rant and rave about how bad the iphone is and then cuddle and caress it in private need to give it a rest. This phone will have problems like any piece of technology throughout the history of our civilization. Some will crack(agree, not good) some will reset some will glitch. I am just tired of hearing about it I guess. I love mine good and bad. Legit complaints are obviously ok but every one else....stop the whining

If you don't want to hear about people having issues with their iphone then don't hang out in a public internet forum dedicated to discussing those issues. Seems pretty simple to me.

Matter of expectation and perception. Some of us are ok with driving POS cars, some of us are not.

Yup, that sounds about right. It's not exactly rocket science, is it? ;)

i agree a wee bit because of the fact that i've had extremely minimal problems with my iphone. i love it and i think it's an AMAZING piece of technology. but like i said, it's technology and it is never gonna be perfect and i think people are very quick to write long negative comments and not so quick to praise it.

on the other hand, i do agree with the others that if you don't wanna see whining, don't click a certain thread. i know i'm a member of the forum for useful information and to hear what people say about CERTAIN aspects that i want more info on buuuut i don't click on everything and don't care to read about other peoples problems unless it involves something i'm concerned about.

just don't read threads you don't necesarrily need too. and try to remember that some people will always complain and be happy that you love your iphone like me =)

ps-i'm not saying you people are lame to complain, i understand cause i've complained about **** in the past...i'm just explaining for this lovely member =)

Dont get me wrong,
I have learned so much from this site over and over again. Believe me when I say I am very glad that this forum exists. To have a place where people can come to share and learn from everyone is amazing. My problem is all the useless whining that many people seem to do. You have a problem share it with others and chances are a resolution will be found. Please just stop the useless whining is all I ask.:)

I started a thread to say how trouble-free my iphone has been. I think allot of the whining is generally people being impatient, over critical and "venting". Not much good comes from excessive complaining. However you may be making the mistake of whining about whining. A similar thing happens I notice in the realm of politics, with liberals who become demon possessed and aggressive in the name of peace and human rights. Not that you are being that extreme, just a similar contradiction.

Or conservatives who become demon possessed and aggressive in the name of money and the right to bear arms?

Tch. Your bias is showing!

I notice a similar thing happens when you put groups of people together -- they all get very touchy about, well, almost everything really.

People like to whine, moan, yell, fight, feel superior to someone, or even to feel downtrodden in the name of just about anything. It makes them feel part of something, gives them a feeling of not being alone in the world. It's a human reaction, and I really doubt that we'll ever learn not to do it, just like war and not letting people starve or be so poor that they haven't even basic living conditions. We haven't learned yet, and it's been a bit of time since even a date allowing for a very very late start to the human race.

IMO, there are newbies, and there are NOOBs.

A newbie might ask something like "Where do I add star ratings to a track on the iPhone. I've looked everywhere." This is a feature not readily apparent on the iPhone, and could easily be missed, even after investigating every screen. This could be someone with an actual brain. Yes, they might have found the answer via Google (and often have already tried), but the wording of the search is trickier than "iPhone 3G cracks". This person may or may not stick around long enough to help others, but their presence is generally not a nuisance and people are usually amenable to helping them.

A NOOB might ask something along the lines of the aforementioned; "I lost my iPhone, can I get a free one?" or my favorite, "Type a personalized tutorial just for me, on subject X, Y, or Z...NEED ANSWER ASAP....URGENT!!!!". They type 47 question marks and exclamations; they post the same thing in 4 different forums so they can get a quicker answer; they threadjack...it goes on and on. These people are, of course, everywhere on the interweb planet, not just on the iPhone forums. They are generally lazy, entitled, self involved, complete idiots, or all of the above. After a certain point, unfamiliarity with netiquette is no longer a valid defense for the vapidity exhibited by these types. They're simply bereft of even a basic level common sense or courtesy. Unfortunately, as the iPhone moves down the food chain in price and availability, we'll be seeing perhaps more than our fair share of them here in the coming months/years.

Excellent post. That sums up alot of the problems here imo.

I've only been here a few month's and I like the forum a lot. The only really hostile place on here is the iPhone forum. But it's like what Ron White say's "You can't fix stupid". So I try to help when I can. :)

I started a thread to say how trouble-free my iphone has been.

To be honest, I understand your motivation, and I'm happy for you to post your experiences, but at the same time, I don't think those threads really help the problem either.

Think about a more extreme example. Say your house had just caught fire due to faulty electrical wiring. If I went and made a thread that was like, "Come on, guys, I plug whatever I want into the outlets and I've lived in my house for fifteen years, and it's never burnt to the ground before..." it would be true that many people have had an experience like mine (the base rate of houses burning down is even lower than the base rate of iPhones being defective).

But does it help your situation any for me to criticize you indirectly for having a burnt down house by pointing out how my house didn't burn down?

I don't think adding another layer of reactionary incivility is going to make the iPhone forum any more civil.

Congrats to the OP for creating yet another thread to whine about the whiners. We need more of these types of threads here.
