Some people are so damn stupid.
I've reported those posts.

Get over yourself. Maybe we should start burning history books to make sure we forget all the horrible things that have happened in the world.

thanks for posting these pics! i can't wait until mine arrives now. i was getting worried about the readability for a bit but it doesn't seem to be a problem. :)

I'm sitting outside on my deck using my glossy display in direct sunlight -- something I could never do with my matte display on my old laptop. I'm glad I made the switch to glossy.

If you've got it at the wrong angle it's like looking in a mirror, but shift it just a degree one direction or the other and it's completely usable.

Thank you for validating my research - and my hopes. This was the one issue that held me up for so long in finally placing my order last week for a 17" i7 with high-resolution glossy. The thing that finally pushed me over the edge was spending an hour in the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in Manhattan after work and finding two 17" MBPs side by side - a high-resolution glossy and a hi-res Matte. Both were beautiful but from a NORMAL viewing angle I felt that the glossy screen was crystal clear and vibrant. The only way I could describe my reaction was that I WANTED to look at the glossy screen but I was fine with looking at the matte. The glossy was really beautiful and I had no trouble with very fine print at a distance further than my normal viewing distance - even with my aging eyes.

This is a very hard AND a very personal decision - because both screens are the best in their own way. Each will be attractive to people looking for certain characteristics.

Oh, in that case i might well get a new wallpaper myself and, say, get a picture from an Al-Quaida website with the planes crashing in the 2 towers.
Can you swear no one here would complain ?
I don't want to start a feud, we might just get back to the topic but still i think the screenshot was inappropriate.

I didn't even realize I had that background up initially, I cycle through backgrounds every few days and that just happened to to be one I had up and I certainly wasn't going to change it just for one picture.

Sorry if it offended you, but that wasn't the intent. I still don't see it being offensive personally, but I don't have any family ties directly to a camp.
And yes, I do know the horrors of what happened from 1933 to 1945. I've done tons of individual research on the topic. It's a very fascinating period in time, hence one reason I'm using this picture currently. :)

But to get back on topic, I don't find glares an issue at all. If one may be on my screen, all I have to do is shift just inches and it goes away.

I don't find the fonts unreadable. It's a very nice screen quality and I have no regrets getting the hi-res. Best $100 upgrade you can get.

Millertime....just goes to prove that no good deed goes unpunished. You could have had a background image of a cow and some vegan would have been offended. There are always people who totally over-react.

Thanks for posting your pics.

You're welcome.

haha but ya good point.

OMG YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Thanks so much. The High Res Glossy looks awesome!!! This may be a stupid question but I've never used a Mac before... do windows maximize and take up the whole screen like in windows?

Yes Matt, you can maximize them. For most OSX windows, clicking on the green dot in the upper left hand corner of the window will max it out to full screen. Likewise, clicking on the yellow dot minimizes it down to the task bar tray. Red closes the window.

HR glossy was the best decision I made. I was intending to dock my 15" MBP to my 22inch Dell monitor (matte) but everytime I do I think about how cartoon-like it makes all my windows look. I've never had good luck with that monitor but the glossy definitely makes things seem more vibrant. Hi-res photos look amazing. I am wanting to get a glossy monitor to dock it on now...

Does the "High Res Glossy" also have this silver bezel or does it have the same black frame as the default standard res?

So in actuality, it really does come down to one question: is the functionality of a screen without tremendous amounts of glare more important than showing off a black bezel to your friends?

LOL @ 'tremendous amounts of glare' comments like this one. If you work in direct sunlight or with your back to a halogen lamp or a completely open window, this can be a problem. If you are some freak of nature who types with the laptop facing away from you at a weird oblique angle, maybe its a concern....but then you can't actually type on the beastie from that kind of angle anyways, so this is really a 'staged shot' sort of nonsense to prove the 'tremendous amount of glare' comment.

For all others, who sit in a normally-lit room directly in front of the screen, it really boils down to personal preference. I've been using a 15" Hi-Res glossy for over a week now, had a glossy non unibody prior to that for 3 years, and several other glossy Vaio's prior to that....and have never had a problem.

Pick what you want but do so based on actual preferences and not all this juiced up hyperbole. The mattes are not washed out like with prior generations and the glossy is not going to cause blindness...unless you use it for pr0n of course. But thats another story.

PS: Thanks to the OP for pics of the Speck Satin case. I had a Speck clear case on my old non-Unibody MBP and despised that thing. It added noticeable weight to the machine and it really wasn't all that tight of a seal, allowing all sorts of crap to get in between the case and the laptop, causing abrasion wear if not removed and cleaned regularly. The new Speck case looked great in these pictures and based on that I ordered one and got it on Friday last. I _LOVE_ this new, sleek design. Makes the machine very pleasant to the touch as well, matches my iPhone case perfectly. Thanks for sharing!

I'm serously thinking about what you say:
"If you are some freak of nature who types with the laptop facing away from you at a weird oblique angle"
No I'm not, but sometimes I would like to share some content on my screen with somebody standing next to me. How could I do that with the glossy screen? (Just tried with the glossy one owned by a friend: I can only see his face!)

"...it really boils down to personal preference"
I'm really trying to understand WHY somebody could prefer a worst product! Maybe somebody could settle for the glossy one. But I can't figure out how he could actually prefer it!!

Please explain!

If it takes two people to use your Mac on a full-time basis, you've got bigger issues than a matte screen can address!

@ReallyBigFeet: i think you will love the Invisible shield :)

Just ordered myself one for my new MBP which i will order tomorrow. Still cant decide on the spec.

Tips:Use the iPad competition ad and you get a coupon for 40% discount for your buy, was so happy i clicked the ad for the first time ever :D:D:D

I saw that and thought about it. But I totally suck at applying those large stickers. I end up with bubbles or get the thing crooked. I tried applying one to my iPhone and totally botched it so ended up buying a second one and letting the guy at the kiosk in the mall apply it for me. The Speck Satin was idiot proof....even I could figure that one out.

What the hell are you saying???? Did you read what I asked???
I wrote two magic words: "sometimes" and "share". Not "use" "full-time".

Oh sorry, maybe you can't read because of the glare! My fault!

So great...you gave me an example where maybe .00001% of your usage of the machine, when the laptop is turned away from you and towards your friend, and your friend is sitting in front of a giant bay window overlooking the white sandy beach at sunrise or sunset THEN it could be beneficial to have a matte screen.

Reaching much?

Did I describe that situation? We were in a lab at the college (about 70% of the usage of the machine).
Anyway you are so good at "mirror climbing".

Now now.. :)

It's the same argument all over again: in some situations there's glare, then the matte would've been more useful. In other situations there's so much glare or no glare at all that it won't make a difference at all.

It's best to decide based on how you'll be using the screen most of the time, and that is, like ReallyBigFeet said, you sitting right in front of the machine. If glossy is fine for you in that situation, go glossy, if not, go matte. You can make up endless non-usual scenarios where both screens have disadvantages. However, if your usual usage situation is a bunch of people standing around the screen looking at glare.. for all means, go matte.

There are no absolutes here people.

I totally agree. But, as I wrote, I was trying to understand why someone could prefer the glossy one if, as you told, in many situations it won't make a difference at all!
Coolness??????
