Not sure how I turned mine off, I thought it was in preferences/sounds...hmm.

Anyway, it doesn't bong anymore.

Works!!

...okay!!! i have something to work at least on my imac (3.06 imac with OS 10.5.4)

its no sense BUT if i

- mute my sound
- open system pref/sound (i did this to check if its really mute on)

then i can restart and no startup chime

this has worked four times i tried out of four

if anyone has my imac and this problem please try it and post....but it seems it works for me yaaaay!!

Windows Sound

Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices Property --> Sounds TAB --> Sound Scheme: Select no Sound.

For my OS. is working. No Sound while startup or shutdown

that noise is VERY useful, believe it or not...

The chime that you hear right when powering on your mac is actually there to let you know that your power supply is working correctly. If you turn the volume down real low you'll be able to hear the noise just faintly. I would never recommend turning the volume all the way down or muting, because if there is a problem with your computer in the future and the volume is down, there is no chime to indicate a problem with the power supply.

iMac startup sound will not shut up.

Ok so I have a 24" 3.06GHZ early 2008 imac running SL. I can not get the chime to stop. It is really really loud like twice the volume of my old macbook. So far I have tried:

1) muting the system before sleep
2) holding down the mute button at startu-
3)psst
4) startup prefpane
5) and another app for this (forgot it)

The reason why Im so bothered by this is because I restart my mac several times late at night to go in and out of windows. Anyone get it to stop?

All you have to do to get rid of the startup sound is mute your speakers before you shut down.

Well, it's generally not a good idea, because hearing the startup sound usually means that everything on the computer is going well. If there's no tone heard, how do you know if it's in good condition or not?
