I tried arcana's StartupSound.prefpane, checked MUTE but i cna still hear the sound on reboot....

I never knew some Mac owners hated the beautiful chime they hear when they turn on their Macintosh. I think it's the most beautiful sound a computer could ever make...

Do Macs still make that sound when you only have Linux installed or when you boot into Windows?

Yes. Its similar to the beep PCs make when they start up.

is this for real? i tried that startupsoundprefpane app and it didn't work for me (late '08 aluminum macbook). so theres no way to turn this annoying sound off at all??!?
