I've have exclusively used the iPhone since '07. I have owned every model. I am huge Apple Fanboy, but I honestly used the Captivate for about a day and it is amazing. I was asked if it was an iPhone killer to which I replied, "no, but it is an iPhone Brawler" Meaning, it can definitely hold its own against the iPhone... Picture quality is amazing, video quality is amazing, screen quality is amazing. Yes the iPhone beats it due to the Retina Display but the Captivate is the first phone since '07 that can actually compare to and compete with the iPhone and be considered a worthy contender....

That's what I was talking about, I didn't think people actually had that much care who sells more. Maybe I missed it, where was it being discussed that this thread was referring to marketplace vs. personal opinion of a device?

Ferris - I was commenting on the impetus to post most of these comparisons/threads. Perhaps not on this thread specifically. But definitely on the other one someone says Iphone for the win! or something like that

Surely you can agree that a lot of these comparison threads are silly in the same way that OS vs Windows is. You can argue until the cows come home which is "better" but ultimately it comes down to personal preference and needs.

Uh, to be honest, I tested out one on my local AT&T, 25 mins or so and:

1. The screen IS responsive, why the hell would Samsung make a phone with a useless touch screen.

2. The screen has too much coloring, I give you that.

3. The phone is a good choice for those who whine for the iPhone 4 reception.

Bottom line, is a good phone, biggest fail though is the lack of LED flash, and well, if you are q typical iPhone user, you would hate the browsing, I haven't found a phone that browses the internet better than the iPhone, in terms of smoothness IMO.

Nice post. The only thing I'd "question" is again - the need to use phrases like iPhone killer or whatever.

Why does one have to displace the other. Can't several phones co-exist in the marketplace and both be great phones, have lots of users and everyone is happy?

Based off 10-15 minutes vs something you are accustomed to for weeks to years?

Sometimes it takes days to weeks understanding a new OS. A learning curve.

I remember playing with the first iPhone when it came out and totally getting it within minutes. Sure, there were hidden features that came to light over time, but overall, I just remember feeling, ah, this makes sense.

You based this off 10 minutes at an att store? Wow what a way to give it an honest chance

I think that is a bit unfair. At least speaking for myself, I'm pretty sure I would know what I would be looking for and certainly would know in probably less than 10 minutes if the phone was even close to meeting my expectations. This is not specific to this phone--or to iPhone 4--but only how current phone compares to something else.

I notice "OS Features" isn't part of your list. Typical iphone fanboy. If you included that, then android blows the iphone out of the water, and you know it.

So me not mentioning OS features qualifies me as an iPhone fanboy? And also, the apps and settings that I mentioned are not part of an OS? Personally, I've never played with an Android phone, but I never said that the iOS or the iPhone was better.

I think that is the whole problem that a lot of people have with the "android phones" in general. You go into a store and pick up the phone and start playing with it. Before you punch in the first thing a salesman is one you like a duck on a Junebug. Blablabla.... I don't know about you but I put the phone down, make an excuse and get out at that point.

the only way you can really give the phone a good try is by using it for a few days, but you can't do that. No way. Nuh uh. No. You have to buy it there, right then and there or else.

Well, I end up going to what I know is good and will work. If you can think of another system, great. If we could rent the phone for three days or two weeks and compare it to what we have, great.

I played with the phone in the store yest and i really really liked it. I still ended up purchasing the iphone4 but its a great alternate. I didnt notice any lag whatsoever, and the browser was surprisingly responsive. The only really downsides i see are that upgrading android seems to be a crapshoot of when each phone will be upgraded, and that the captivate didnt have a flash.

I think 10 minutes is plenty time to decide whether or not a phone is good.

10-15 minutes is a good enough time for me to think whether I like this device or not. I did not say anything about battery life. I only mentioned the browsing and touch screen experience. UI was not as good as iphone 4.

Oh I agree, I just wasn't sure if I was being a "lazy" reader and missed something in here.

It's silly how some people defend one thing or another when they are just the end user. I dream of a day where the fan boy mentality dies, or at least gets the hell out of the technology sector. We are geeky enough, fan boys just make it that much worse.

;)

Actually battery life, from what I've read, is better on the Captivate.

I personally don't think 10 minutes is enough time either, hell it took me 10 minutes to determine if I liked the keyboard. But whatever works for you, I'm not arguing your point, I just think it was a bit drastic to say the Captivate sucks, because on the contrary it's pretty awesome. It may have some short comings next to iPhone 4, but for some that stuff doesn't matter. Like camera quality for example. I like having a flash on my camera, even though I don't think I've used it once. Some couldn't care less.

That's not enough time to know if you liked it or not. You didn't give it a fair chance. I'm sure non-iPhone users wouldn't like the iPhone in ten minutes. Because I know in 2007, I took my iPhone back twice and got the AT&T (or HTC) Tilt, but stuck with the iPhone in the end because it was simple to use and it was a "must-have" back in 2007.

Yep it takes some time, because I thought the Motorola Droid sucked arse, then my younger son got one and considering the options on VZ it is one of their nicest phones, I just HATE VZ and I do not qwerty keyboards, otherwise it is a really nice phone to use.

Give Peace a Chance

I have a new Samsung Vibrant (Tmobile version of the captivate). Its ok at best. The camera, video recording, mail client, apps, speed of OS are all a major step down from the iPhone 4. It suffers from the deathgrip too.

Why does someone need to spend more than 10 min to get a feel for the phone? The things I look for in a smartphone nowadays are:

1. The screen brightness/resolution/responsiveness
2. How fast does it run/load apps?
3. The types of apps available
4. Play with all the settings
5. How good is the web browser?
6. The feel of typing on the device
7. Weight and size
8. Reception

I can't imagine spending more than 10 min to do all that. I mean, what else is there to do at the store?
Yeah, some of the people flaming should take a step back.
If you were looking to replace the iPhone 4 with the captivate(I know I was until its release and I finally like saw it). All you need to look at is the speed, smoothness, specs, customization, OS, and normal functions.

If he says the keyboard is crappy and it lags with a video wallpaper then it does... Not for him. Why flame?

I like to have the phone and use it for at least 3 days. What is a fun side trip at the beginning turns into a pain in the neck after you have had to do it several times. What seems like it could be an OK alternative to what you are using now can turn into a real stumbling block. The newness of something can wear off pretty quickly but you have to give it time. At least I do.

Fanboys aren't geeks, they're too simple minded to be geeks. I'm a geek and I have a couple dozen phones sitting around here. Blackberries, Windows Mobile phones and PDAs, Androids, a bunch of non-smart phones and, oh yeah, an iPhone. Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses, I'm not a "fan" of any particular phone and even less so of any particular manufacturer. I listen to the opinions of geeks but I don't give a crap about anything a fanboy has to say about anything because they're incapable of formulating a genuine opinion.

Can you please stop being rational. I'm afraid some other posters are going to think you're strange ;)

I may go check out the Samsung Captivate either today or tomorrow at my nearest AT&T Store. Will probably only have a limited time to experience it which prevents me from giving out a well-thought out conclusion.

I may end up agreeing with the OP or I may not. I usually go into looking at different phones with an open mind because variety is the spice of life. I remember I enjoyed playing around with the LG Dare about two years ago when some people hated it (had a resistive screen). The only opinion you can really trust is the one you experienced on your own.

I went to AT&T store today and tried out new samsung Captivate. Some reviewers described it as good iphone 4 alternative.

Well, after playing about 10-15 minuets, I was very disappointed with the phone. The touch screen was not as responsive as apple and the phone was harder to use than iphone 4. Maybe, I am used to iOS 4, but Android OS wasn't as great as I hoped to be. Samsung also put their custom designed touch Wiz 3.0 on it and yea... it sucks. The phone was lagging with video wallpaper.

I mean these website reviewers are AWFUL! Why would they even call captivate as iphone 4 replacement? It's no where near iphone 4'. Besides antenna issue on my iphone 4, (Solved by bumper) I like my iphone 4.

i will laugh my ass off if you tell us you pre-ordered an iPhone 4 because you bought a phone you probably never used, yet after 10 minutes this phone is not good for you? *mind boggled*

10 minutes usage. Dam, breakthrough record for determining how a device will fare in it's life time for 10 minutes usgae.

I any case, ignoring all that, did you happen to SEARCH the forums BEFORE posting? Cause if you did, you'd be posting this in the HUGE thread already made on this topic.

Well clearly spending time on research isnt his forte :D

My biggest problem with the Captivate is that if everyone thinks Apple's RF sucks, they should look at Samsung, they're even even worse. We have a bunch of Samsung phones around the house (moms...) and when I compare my iP4 to the various Sammies, they always show less reception and they can't hold calls in low signal environments, while my father (with his Nokia N95/N75) and me can go on talking fine

You have ZERO Samsungs like the Captivate. Comparing an iPhone 4 to your old Samsung phones is just ridiculous. Should i compare my Wifes Samsung Gravity T to my iPhone? Really?

Yes, the Galaxy S series compares well to the iPhone. It is the only Samsung with the Super AMOLED display, And they arent even running their new firmware yet. It will be even better.
