Hi, my friend is upgrading to the white iphone 4 when it comes out. He tells me he sells me his iphone 3GS for CDN$170 and I do not have to follow his contract, so basically I will have a contract free Iphone 3GS. Is it a good deal?

Right now, I do have a bb pearl (CDMA). When I go to the telus store, will they change my current plan to the iphone 3GS?

Thank you

Assuming 16gb? Yes. This is a good deal. Now when he'll actually be able to get a White i4 and sell you his 3GS is another matter...

So basically there wasnt anything wrong with it, just wasnt an iphone. Seriously, why do people like you even bother to try other phones?

Frankly, sport, it's a free country and if I wanted to give it a shot, I jolly well can. Look, I loved the screen, I loved the customizability, and yeah- I had no antenna issues. In the end, and in my opinion (of which I can certainly speak without your permission), I thought that Android wasn't as polished an experience that iOS was. There are also a few other issues that precluded the decision like weak signal in my house- of which I didn't feel like spending money purchasing a signal extender, weak signal penetration in the building I work in as well. No 4G in my house. Initial horrid battery use (which I was able to tweak and overcome). Those issues weren't the reason I took it back.

Seriously, why do people like you insist on criticizing our right to experiment?

You have to understand that half of the people who have the iphone didn't buy it for the tech or the features.... they bought it because it is trendy and cool.

Now that the cool factor is decreased, they go out and buy a <insert android> phone and see if it gets them any attention from other people. When it doesn't, and they realize that they don't really have a need (or knowledge) about Android's extra features, they go back to what they know.

There's nothing wrong with preferring an iPhone, but it isn't about the technology for a lot of people.

I watched this happen with a guy I work with. He bought a 3GS and had no idea what he was doing with the phone- he previously had a Blackberry. I add he didn't know how to use the Pearl either, but he made sure that the 3 women that sat adjacent to him thought he was a genius with the phone. Then he "decided" the 3GS was old tech and got a Droid X. The ladies were definitely more curious about the Droid X than the other handsets he had. Well, as of last Friday- he was back to the Blackberry.

For me, technology is somewhat important. If you want to compare the EVO and the i4, the EVO doesn't win. The camera image quality is worse, slower processor, no gyroscope, lower resolution display, 30 FPS limit, I can go on. But I didn't buy the EVO for that, otherwise I would have just bought the iPhone 4. I bought the EVO because I thought it was the best platform for me to try out Android. I didn't like the Captivate and it's lack of build quality. The EVO is a nice phone. It's just easier and more intuitive to do a lot of the things that I do on a daily basis with iOS. Software development does represent technological growth and in that, I think iOS is more polished. For me. And that is what it's about- the individual user experience.

.
AT&T won me over with their customer service too. I got the X from newegg and had problems activating so I went into a Verizon corp. store and they told me they couldn't help me. WTF, Verizon phone, Verizon store, no help (that said, newegg's customer service was fantastic). Then I went into an AT&T store and the lady bent over backwards to get me back and make me happy. Even got my unlimited data back without a fight.

The reason the Verizon store wouldn't help you is because you didn't buy it there and did buy it through an indirect channel.

The REPS who work at COR stores get commission for SELLING, so if you have a problem and didn't buy it from them they could care less. It's the same as buying a Samsung TV from Walmart, but taking it to Target for help. Same product, but you took it to a place that didn't sell it to you.

I work for AT&T and it's the same at my store as well. If you bought a phone from a reseller online and came into our store for help, we would direct you right back to the reseller. I have very high quotas I need to make every month, and wasting my time with someone who bought it through a reseller and not me is not helping me sell anything top make quota.

You save money with buying it online, but if you have issues, then stay with where you bought it. You may pay a bit more in a COR store, but you are paying for the service and help if you need it instead of ordering a "self install kit" online. So please don't waste our time.

Personally I wouldn't use Android. Everything Google does is in Beta.

Most of the phones offered with Android are poor in every respect from screen quality to battery life to camera.

I wouldn't be caught dead with a SnapDragon processor or an AMOLED /SuperAMOLED Pentile Matrix display.

The Android apps market reminds me of Cydia.

Saying all that I am happy Android exists. It pushes Apple to excel. And keep ahead of the competition.

You should pick up the Froyo update today and let us know how it is.

Froyo was nice. I manually installed it from the servers before it got pulled (in prep for the official, I presume). I'm guessing it was close to the final build. It was better than 2.1 and I did notice battery and speed improvements. There were a variety of things that I liked- the Flashlight app was nice, managing apps, and there was a tweak with messaging. I'm actually curious to see what Gingerbread looks like. It may bring me back as I hear (speculation) that the polish is getting there. For now, at least, I'm back to iOS.

On a side note- at least until the new phone gets here, iOS 4 is interesting on an iPhone 3G. I'm guessing the hardware isn't handling it as well as they thought?

I traded in my iPhone 3G for an EVO, and after a week and a half I'm still really liking it. I agree that Android 2.2 may not be as "polished" as iOS 4, but I like the customization and the new feel of it because I was a bit bored with the iPhone after two years. The fact that you can have widgets on your screen showing you actual data (calendar, weather, etc.), instead of just a grid of apps, is my favorite thing about the Android UI, and maybe the only thing I really think is better than the iOS UI.

The Android Market doesn't have nearly as much as the App Store, but that being said, I've only come across a couple of apps that I used regularly on the iPhone that I can't get for the EVO. I find browsing the internet to be a much better experience on the EVO, mainly because of the bigger screen, that I don't even find myself looking for mobile-optimized websites anymore.

As for the phone part, at first I missed the Favorites section of the iPhone, especially after the Favorites widget didn't work correctly on my EVO. But then I realized that I could put icons on my home screen (that look like contact pictures) that are one-touch shortcuts to the people I call the most. I rarely even go into the actual phone part of the phone now because my usual contacts are all one touch away.

So, for me, I think I would be happy with either the iOS or Android platforms, but right now I'm happier with the EVO than I would have been with the iPhone 4 just because it's different.

Ive been using Blackberry for 2 years. Last thursday i went to my mobile company and bought the Motorola Milestone. Android is nice, but i dont find it very productive.

Email push on blackberry is faster than android.
I miss blackberry messenger.
I cant beat blackberry keyboard with the virtual one in android. (Ive discovered slide it, its better than tapping the letters, but, its not a real keyboard).
Some proceses aren't closed right, so, they keep running in background using battery. (There comes task killers)

I tried ebuddy, meebo, nimbuzz, etc, and cant find an msn messenger as good as microsoft msn for blackberry.

Battery really sucks on android phones. I need to use 2G only networks on it to last longer. My BB lasted more than 2 days without charging.

We cant afford iphones, here at Argentina a 3GS 16GB is U$S900.-

Should i go back with blackberry? Or try to get used to android?

Sorry for my english!

I was really worried about battery life before I got the EVO because I read all the negative things online about it, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far. I have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS on all the time (only turn 4G on when I need it) and I get about a day and a half per charge, which is about 20 hours better than my iPhone 3G. I also like the fact that I can buy an extended-life one battery if I ever want to get more time out of my phone.

There are Android phones with slide out, full keyboards, but if you like Blackberry so much better, you should just return your Android phone and go back to BB. Sounds like it was perfect for you.

My personal opinion...the older iPhones aren't worth it at any price, only because the i4 is that good. I think you'd see your friends phone and wish you had just gone straight for the i4

The polish of iOS comes at the cost of being such restricted OS. Once Android gets more and more refined this argument gets weaker and weaker.

That's a truly bonafide fanboy statement.

You can't compare the current ios vs what android os might happen in the future.

For now, the "cost" of a closed ecosystem is well worth it to many people. See: lack of quality in the android market, lack of profitability, questionable security...

Iphone 4 starting to get super boring and weak .. No offense

Seriously.. yall prolly gonna bag me about this.. but..

I went to the sprint store and im really thing about getting the Evo 4 g..

I gotta say though the touch screen part on the iphone is way better.. but.. damn..

Why the hell does the iphone gotta has a small punny screen... i cant watch no movies on that thing.. and why.. did it not come with a 10mp camera? evo has the 8... and why the hell cant i have a video wall paper???

Why am i posting this??''

Cause i want sombody to convince me the iphone 4 is worth keeping then going with the evo 4g

Seriously.. man... apple shoulda put in a bigger screen and a stronger processor.. so it woulda made the evo look like doodoo

It shouldn't have 10mp because of all of the noise that would result from it.
IT shouldn't have a bigger screen because it would be hard to operate with one hand, nor would it have its amazing resolution.
Different strokes for different folks.

again the whole MP is a myth its all about the lens etc. the evo has what a 1" bigger not even screen. /yawn oh and good luck with watching movies on your evo as I'm sure the batterys will die by the time the movie is over too.

Haven't used the EVO yet, but all the HTC phones I've played around with have that crappy touch screen.

And besides, they still use a display with visible pixels, yikes lol

You could put a video wallpaper on the IP4, and a 10MP camera as well, cell cameras will always suck. Seriously, it's just a use if you have to add on. Why the heck do you need 10MP? To cover your bedroom's floor with the picture of a car that passed by you? And a bigger screen... Hmm, I agree with you, but then it wouldn't have the same battery life and it would be heavier/thicker = NOT happening.

Have you even seen comparison pictures between the big bad 8mp Evo camera and iPhone 5mp camera? Maybe you should look at reviews before making up your mind.

Sorry but did the iPhone battery suddenly win over all cell phones? I've never been able to get through a day of use on any phone without needing a recharge and it's been worse on the iPhone since inception.

The Evo 4G is awesome but it's Sprint and Sprint is a no-go.

Want to watch movies? Watch them on tv.
Want a bigger screen? Get an iPad.
Want more megapixels? Ok, but anyone who knows about photography will tell you megapixels don't matter; it's sensor size that matters. And the iPhone 4 has a pretty big one.
Want battery draining wallpaper? Well, if you must...

It sounds to me like the honeymoon period of your iPhone 4 has worn off. And I'm willing to bet it'd wear off just as quickly with an Android, Windows, or Blackberry device.

^ It should be said that I do know a Sprint Evo owner and he says the camera bites. Even reviews of the Droid X say the camera is not as awesome as the iPhone.
