Camera? You're kidding right?
Dude, it's not an iPhone.

HEY! "It's not an iPhone" is my line!
And that wouldn't ruin iPhone sales, only increase the sales of the iPod touch.
I say "It's not an iPhone" when people think it should have EDGE / 3G and/or a built in mic.

hahaha yeah but I think a camera would be pushing it from Apple's view in terms of design and keeping it marketed ( lookswise ) as an "iPod", I know other mp3 players have cameras but it doesn't seem like Apple's style. Plus they would have to move the wifi antenna down to the bottom to place a camera like the iPhone.

They could put the camera where it is on the original iPhone.

To be fair, the iPod touch was a bigger leap in the iPod lineup than the addition of a camera. The 2nd gen iPod touch has a speaker (I think people were saying before its release that a speaker is iPhone territory).

But I do agree that a camera and several other features are unlikely to come onto the iPod touch, at least not soon.

Yes I agree because a speaker still has to do with MUSIC and a camera starts to stray away from the music player aspect.

And a web browser doesn't stray away from the music player aspect?

Yeah I know but I was talking about the "Design" and also the camera is barely a 2mp in the current iPhone How would it fit in the next iPod and make it thinner? idk I just don't see it but that's just my opinion

Maybe it could be THICKER (horror of horrors!) and also have GPS and a camera. Would that be better? ;)

3rd Generation Improvements

Same as all my friends, I don't own one yet but I'm patiently waiting for an improvement and added features like:
- Battery life at least 45-50hours (even if it means a thicker unit)
- Ability to organize files and folders easily
- At least 128GB of space
- Ability to delete unwanted files (songs to be more precise)
- Decent clarity and bass depth external speakers
- am/fm radio
With these added features I would instantly buy one even if its price was as high as $1000 (and most people that i know would do so too)

I would want to see Apple add some sort of a high quality video recorder on it. Also, add a higher quality sound card to boost the listening experience.

High quality video recorder?! The iPhone doesn't even have a native video recorder.

And better sound card, most likely. I'm pretty sure every couple iPod hardware updates they upgrade the sound card. I'm not too sure is the one in the 2G iPod touch was upgraded from the 1G.

I'd like to see a camera, but I think if they did that, they would have to add gps of some sort. I can't imagine them adding a camera, and with 'places' in iLife, not having a way to geotag the photos. People would howl in protest!

My guess is better screen resolution, more memory and maybe bluetooth.

People would howl and protest about not getting a GPS on an iPod for a feature that's on the computer?

GPS? You people need to put down the bongs.

If they put GPS on the next generation iPod Touch (one being released in 2009) I will buy one myself just to spite myself. But, no. Never going to happen. The iPT has a market and it has no solid reason to get GPS to fit that market. GPS would increase mfg. price and lower profit compared to the amount of extra sales... how many people would actually come to the iPod Touch just because it has GPS? 1%? .001%?

I wish it had a camera, but I have the suspicion that it won't be on the iPT until 2010, if then.

800x480 screens on PMP's are the Norm now, so they need to up the rez and the capacity and they would have a winner.

Heres an interesting thought. what if apple let you customize pretty much everything on your touch. Im not talking adjust the brightness or rearange your icons, more like you want a camera? thats 100 bucks extra. GPS? another 100 bucks

When folks on here say they want GPS, I wonder which kind of GPS they mean. Technically, no cell phone (including the iPhone) use real GPS, but rather that lame triangulation stuff with the cellular network. Why not REAL GPS that actually communicates with orbiting satellites, like the Garmins, TomToms and Magellans do? Let's see Apple squeeze something like THAT into the 3G touch! Now THAT would kick a considerable amount of ass! :D :apple:

Saying "no cell phone" uses real GPS is incorrect, unless you mean "cell phone" as opposed to "smartphone" (even though the iPhone is sometimes lumped into the "not a smartphone" category, it's hard to argue that it isn't, I think...)
As at least one example, the AT&T Tilt (a.k.a HTC Kaiser, HTC TyTN II) has and can use normal GPS (not AGPS) to navigate without using any kind of cellular data. I have one, have used it, and know this to definitely be true :D I imagine there are other smartphones that can do this as well.
Also, as far as I can tell, the iPhone does have normal GPS, but it also is assisted by other things.
It wouldn't be impossible to add to the iPod Touch, but I'm unsure as to whether Apple would /want/ to. It would be crazy useful, and I'd be all for it, but Apple does have a benefit to keeping the two devices reasonably separate and features that bring them closer together isn't necessarily in their best interest.
Although who knows? Maybe one day they'll be the same device and if you want the cell service you get a contract for it and if you don't... you can still use all of the non-cell dependent features. But that seems unlikely. XD

Right now, I would be happy if whatever firmware issues there are would be resolved, so updating wouldn't f--- up the player. As for extras, an FM tuner would be nice. I don't need a camera or a GPS. I can't think of any hardware cosmetics it needs save for a less scratch prone surface on the back. It already has a speaker, albeit not the best one. Any thinner and you could slice cocaine with it.

I wouldnt think its gunna upgrade much.
maybe a bit more capacity at a more reasonable price.
having a text messaging feature will need a wireless service and completly defeats the purpose of a Iphone.
more apps will be better too.
perhaps a wireless syncing device might be good.
And a less-easily-scrach able back.

I'm afraid wireless syncing would kill the battery.
And yes, a less scratch attractive back would be awesome. Maybe something like the iPhone 3G's back.
