Merom Laptops Delayed Until 2007?

That story doesn't make any sense to me. Apple is already putting Meroms in the new iMac. That belies the idea that the chips are in short supply.
 
I don't know how credible that source is, but if their info turns out to be correct, then I'll be pretty pissed off. We have all waited long enough...
 
I agree with the comment regarding having enough to launch the imac, seems odd to forfeit the MBP to get the imac out. None of the mac sites have run with this story yet so hopefully there is nothing significant behind it.
 
this is utter crap. the inquirer is a noteably bad and unreliabe source. i could almost belive merom in the MBP at the end of september, but i think we will see it within the next week. not until next year? no way.
 
when the merom mbp's do come out during the next couple of weeks, i wish we could beat this ***** senseless for telling such lies.
 
Well then I will just buy a PC laptop...

It is stupid to put your limited Meroms into the iMacs when Conroes would have done much better for cheaper, and then kill your highly lucrative mobile lines at the same time.

Sorry, I call hogwash on this source, it makes absolutely zero sense.

It may be Steve's latest schemes... selling unusable Yonah chips not even fit for iMacs to Pro sheepies... yeah, that'd fly alright.
 
It sounds reasonable that Apple will be unable to get as many Merom chips as it would like. So the question is, what will be their strategy in using those chips. Putting them into a low volume, high margin line sounds reasonable to me, so it seems the MacBooks/Pros will have to wait.

Hang on a second, you got it mixed up. The MBPs is the low volume, high margin line. The iMacs on the other hand are the high volume, low margin cheapies for everyone and his mom.

Why did apple put the Meroms in the iMAcs instead of Conroes? Isn't the Conroe just the desktop form of the Merom? Seems to me there would be more advantages for everyone(consumer and Apple) if they put mobile parts in mobiles and desktop parts in desktops. Also, the first impression I got of that inquirer article is that it is full of it. The article reads like a jr. high english paper and had nothing to support it except the moles running past his house. I guess in that way the article is kinda cute. Still, I don't think Apple would let the Pro model notebook fall behind. Not only would they loose sales that way, it would hurt their image.
 
How many people thought we could get a 24" iMac... on WEDNESDAY morning? Apple is up to something big. Maybe not computer releated... be something BIG all the same. Ives is working on something- and we know its not been the computers :D

I'm just repeating the Inquirer argument, but your comment that iMacs have more volume than MacBook Pros makes sense. I haven't thought about the numbers. Unforunately if supply is really the problem, then putting the limited amount of Meroms into lots of iMacs just delays the MacBooks/Pros even longer. I hope that isn't true, but wishful thinking can't overcome a supply problem.

I want to respond to your note about "reliable" without pulling the discussion from [THIS] thread into [THAT] thread. I see two questions. First: Is there a shortage of Merom chips. That sounds reasonable. Second: Will that shortage affect the introduction of Merom MacBooks/Pros if limited Meroms are being diverted to iMacs. That also sounds reasonable. I'm going to duplicate this post on [THIS] thread so that any responses can appropriately be put [HERE].

The Inquirer believes that, contrary to previous rumors, Apple notebooks using Intel's Core 2 Duo mobile variant code-named "Merom" may be delayed until 2007 due to supply issues at Intel.

...Woodcrest is getting the lion's share of production, over 70% of Xeons will be new. Conroe is next in line with 20+%, followed by a syphilitic trickle of Meroms... What this means is Apple is faced with putting out laptops that have cases made of real unobtanium, or they can wait and roll it out right. Since it is mole migration season, I have been asking many of the little critters streaming past my house, and they all say that iMeromBooks are a 2007 product.

While the Inquirer seems to have a decent track record of Intel rumors, its Apple track record continues to be suspect, so take this one with a grain of salt. Of note, the entire iMac line was upgraded to include Merom chips yesterday.

Purely based on this I think this rumor is off the mark. And what does "70% of Xeons will be new" mean anyway? 70% of all manufacturing will be for the Xeon? Doubtful.

Every other manufacturer is stuffing Merom's in their notebooks and desktops and Apple is unlikely to make a huge push with a Merom iMac (as it has done by slashing the price and launching the 24") if chip supply is going to be "syphilitic."

Doesn't make any sense at all really and who the hell really uses "syphilitic" in a tech article...
 
Anyway, I hope that September 12 is a day that we could see Merom in the MacBook family.

I've been having my girlfriend hold off buying her MacBook until the processor upgrade happens. She's going to be upset if it doesn't happen next week.

Speaking of next week... I sure hope that iPod nanos get some sort of overhaul as well.
 
i dont understand why every other manufacturer would have plenty of merom but apple would not.

Don't you think the MBP's will get merom before MB's? Could it be possible that they add merom's to all the portables at once?
 
okay...

I don't know how I've convinced myself but I'm going to buy a MBP after next week's news regardless of an update. Like the previous post, I'll buy when I need it (right now for school) and just be happy with what I've spent all summer saving for.
