You guys are alll wrong... Merom went to the iMacs for a reason. BECAUSE Conroe is going in to the MBP! That way MBP has no problem looking better than the iMac... Duh guys... duh...

Of course! Silly me, how could I have ever overlooked this! One step closer to sterility!

I hope you are being sarcastic!!!

As conroe is a desktop processor and will not go into a laptop!!!

No, I think he's right. ;)
Didn't you read all the guides?

Spoken to apple business UK/Europe

Well I just got off the phone to Apple, had not read this rumor before calling them, just not near a PC to check before I called.

The guy on the end of the phone confirmed that Macbook pro did not currently have core 2 duo processor he said they had not being confirmed for retail sales yet.

I asked if i should check the web site, he then added that I should check it around the Paris Expo time, either the 12th or 13th September. :D

Now I believe him more and he may of being fobbing me off, but this was the business line.

MBP next week, probibly Wendesday ;)

Perhaps there are two different issues: some constraint in availability in Merom chips, perhaps after the iMac was switched over, so nothing they could do about it now - remember when they rolled back the speed of the desktops when they couldn't get the announced chip; and... wait for it...

maybe there is a delay because they're working on a new case, one with magnetic latch, maybe not metal, etc. I was fully expecting this anyway, Apple has several times introduced a bridge computer using new chip but old case, then almost immediately got out a brand new configuration.

He think about it. You laptop now has another purpose!!! Not just email/web/work and that junk oh no no no...

and yes I was joking. I know a conroe is a desktop processor but I need to joke a little because my deadline to when I have to get a laptop is coming quickly...

i reckon they had to release the iMac now because they wanted to add the 24" to the line up before opening there movie store that sells HD content. how would all those consumers watch proper HD with no proper HD machine.

Would that mean that they might introduce a HD MBP?

This PAGE 2 story is a little alarming on the surface. I'm sure those of us patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for C2D MBP's felt our stomachs churn a little while reading this article from The Inquirer. So it got me thinking about a few things.

1. If true, we all know Apple would never come out and say something to this affect. They wouldn't sacrifice current sales of CD MBP's by alerting everyone about this fact. So if it's true, we probably won't know for certain until Apple releases their laptops with the generation after C2D. That would suck.

2. If true, why would they even bother with C2D then? Why not just wait until the generation after merom and institute that? Isn't Santa Rosa (or whatever it's called) coming out by Spring of 2007? Why not just wait until then? Seems like a slippery slope, and if Apple were to adopt such a policy, we'll likey be stuck with yonah in MBP's and MB's forever. This sort of makes me think the article isn't true. I believe we'll definitely see C2D apple laptops before the end of the year, or I'll eat a platypus.

3. This is a question for everyone. If this is true, how many of you out there will go ahead and buy the current MBP or MB without waiting for a C2D version? How long will you wait?

If nothing shows up by the first week of October or so, I'll probably just go ahead and get the current MBP. I may end up changing my mind, but if I buy it, I can always sell it later and buy the C3D or whatever comes next.

Think you can call him back and say you changed your mind that now you're looking into getting a Macbook and wondering when the C2D will be in those? :)

Some Random Points

1. 70% of Xeon production now shipping as the new Woodcrest chip (that's how I read it): big whoop, Xeon is a small part of Intel's overall CPU production, compared to desktop and mobile chips.

2. Apple will be happy if they ship 1 million Mac Pro units in 12 months x 2 cpus each = 2 million Woodcrest chips for Apple the first year of production. Again, drop in the buck for Intel. (I've ignored Xserver as insignificant)

3. All these CPU lines are now on the 65 nm process, which means higher chip production per wafer.

4. Apple announced Jonah-based iMacs before any other PC vendor, which signaled that Apple and Intel had made a deal on priority chip supply when Apple signed up to switch away from IBM.

5. Apple's overall unit sales of Macs is small, compared to Dell, HP, etc. iMac and MBP are a subset of those sales, so even a "constrained" chip supply, from Intel's perspective, should be able to satisfy Apple. If you keep MB out of the picture for the next three months, how many Merom chips are we talking about? Q306 Apple sold 529k desktops (mini, iMac, PM and Xserver), so lets call it 400k Merom-based iMacs for Q4. They sold 798k laptops. A large percentage of those would be MB, so lets say 300k Merom-based MBP for Q4. That's a total demand of 700k Merom chips in Q4 to satisfy Apple's needs. Again, this is a trivial percentage of Intel's capacity.

Conclusion: The article is rubbish. We may see a delay in getting Merom into the MB, but I think MBP will be updated next week. (Can you tell I'd like to order a new Merom-based MBP, soon?)

wait..

I'll wait a couple weeks. If nothing is released or officially mentioned by then I'll be too annoyed too spend my money at some laptop Apple is obviously trying to milk to get rid of Yonahs...
I just sold my 3 year old Powerbook 17", and can't wait to get a new one. Just that I will not support Apple when they're being stupid..
I've had 9 macs without considering a PC until now, that's not a good sign for Apple. They must know that we now compare them with the other manufactors, because now WE CAN. It used to be impossible to compare without some guesswork, so we could just lull ourselves into the whole "mhz doesnt count, we're DIFFERENT"-thing, but that is kinda hard now.

But please, let me order a new 17" before I have to spend my money on something else. And after getting annoyed already, that won't be the "old" Macbook Pro...

Apple won't produce a laptop with Merom until 2007. The delay is most likely due to a convergence of two things, production and Apple's limited range.

All this talk of these new chips apparently, maybe, possibly, maybe not, possibly not going into MacBook Pros is making me dizzy.

I would like to ask one question guys, I am planning to order a MacBook Pro 17" next Friday or the following Monday. Lets say Apple announce that Meron is in a MacBook Pro straight away, will it then bump up the price? I have my £1750 set for getting a MacBook Pro (8% Student Discount). Am I looking at having to fork out more if and when the new chip goes into it?

On a personal note...I know we all like our products to be better and such like but its feckin annoying having expensive things like high end laptops almost becoming obsolete within 6 months next to an new brother off the production line  I don't know about you but I find it a real pain all this jazz and consider myself possibly lucky that I had not bought my MacBook Pro last week as opposed to next week?!

May be the new Merom MBP is the new PS3 ;)

Sort of... This is The Inquirer... so maybe they mean no Merom in Apple laptops in Europe - screw over Europe like Sony!!

That won't happen... Apple actually cares about ALL of their customer base unlike some...:)

If there was really such a supply problem, apple would have put conroe(still not sure why they didn't) in the iMac instead. I highly doubt apple would wait until 07' to upgrade the MBPs. Apple may have a bad track record with timely updates, but that was because neither IBM nor motorola could produce anything to upgrade too fast enough.

1. If true Apple will have to do something to keep from lossing sales: new case, speed bumps, price cuts, etc.

2. It seems to me if Merom is so far behind in production to not supply Apple but keep Dell happy, then Santa Rosa would be pushed back too. But yes, if they have to wait until 07 then they should wait for Santa Rosa.

3. Something has to change in the MBP soon. They are next on the list, everything else is newer. I will be waiting for that.

The entire idea behind this report makes no sense. Intel is running 2 mobile chips right now: Yonah and Merom. They will be cutting back Yonah production, they want to get everything to 64 bit to match AMD. They were offering Merom at the same price as Yonah for that reason: get all cutomers to Merom. I imagine that the lines that made Yonah in the past will be making Merom. So as intial production of Merom is at a level so that companies can start to order a lot of these ships they will move Yoanh production over to Merom.

The idea is that they have to make mobile chips. Hello? Is Intel leaving the mobile market, NO!

Exactly. Merom is pin compatible with Yonah. This makes it easier to put in the iMacs, plus it generates less heat.

Conroe in iMac would have probably called for a rearrangement of the insides and would have pused the release back.

I hope the delay in the MBP is due to more upgrades besides CPU and extra quality control.

I think to key phrase in this article is the "iMeromBooks are a 2007 product".
Note the emphasis on iMeromBooks.
I take this to mean the MacBook won't be updated until 2007 - which doesn't sound too unreasonable.
The reporter - obviously being clueless - took this to mean all Apple laptops including the MacBook Pro.

A few months ago, I chose mid-late September as the time that I would buy a MBP for four reasons:

1. They might do an update for Paris Macworld.
2. They might do an update during a special media event.
3. I will have the money.
4. I need (want) one.

Merom or no Merom, I'm still sticking to my original plan.

Doubt it. In the past prices usually only go down.

Also, why not hold out until next Tuesday, the "Showtime" event?

It is stupid to put your limited Meroms into the iMacs when Conroes would have done much better for cheaper, and then kill your highly lucrative mobile lines at the same time.

I'm calling bull as well. Other PC makers seem to have no trouble getting merom laptops out, and apple has enough meroms for imacs, but apple laptops somehow can't get a merom until 2007? How does it make any sense that they're in sufficient supply for everyone and everything but apple laptops?

And as generik says, if meroms were in that short of a supply, I'm sure apple would ahve used conroe in the imacs (which they should have anyway, but that's another issue).
