How is that more elegant than clicking the right mouse button of a normal mouse?

One less mechanical part to break for a start. My left hand is always on the keyboard so to press the ctrl modifier is a minimal movement.

To be perfectly honest if I can get away with a keyboard shortcut instead of using the mouse all the better, so using the keyboard as well as the mouse isn't a problem for me. It's a matter of approach and you have to understand the origins of having a one button mouse on macs.

I'm not saying it's good or bad having one button just that it's understandable why it is still that way (even though the OS understands 'right clicks' etc etc).

A Mac user who is concerned about durability of components?

Lol, oh wait... you are serious?

When using the trackpad, I personally find two fingered scrolling more natural. I also find single button clicking more natural, (using both type of laptop at work confirms my usage habits), and so when I am continually switching from one finger moving to two finger scrolling, it also becomes more natural to stick an extra digit on the trackpad and clicking when wanting to right-click/ctrl-click.

Some just prefer it this way. I use ctrl-click more than the average person, (hence my BT MM is set to four button over three), but others barely use it and so having one large "select" button works better for the majority I say.

I'd say the single button LOOKS more elegant than two. The big reason to keep one button is for non-power users and long time Mac users. I worked with some people who spent over a decade on Macs and never realized that they could do any ctrl or command clicks. After I showed them everything they could do, including Expose, they still never used them. One button is just simpler for many people. I would hope that Apple could do like the Mighty Mouse and conceal two buttons under one. Default would only see one button, but power users could switch to two. I personally only ever use the button to drag things, so one button is fine for me.

I've been using Macs for a decent amount of time - I love them. And the more I use OS X the more I like it.

but I'm strictly in the one-mouse-button-is-not-enough school of thought. IMO OS X is much easier to use with 2 buttons (or more) - and I find my Macbook trackpad a pain - even in OS X. In windows it's a big pain.

I really wish Apple would get away from such strict secrecy. I would love to know where we stand on the Meroms. Its starting to feel like the transition from G4 to G5, ie... never gonna happen due to technical issues.
Apple should come out and say, "look for the updates in 2 weeks" or something similar. Especially when the new product will bring us from 32bit to 64bit which is a pretty big deal when combined with OSX 10.5. If it were just speed bumps, then it isn't so critical to me.
I would simply like to know if the delay will be extreme or short. Any official word from Apple would be appreciated. These rumors of rumors is killing me. How bad can it be to say, "coming in two weeks, or two days, or two years".....? Why the secrecy? Is it the hype? Or just a holdover from PPC days?

Maybe nobody's asked them about updates. Perhaps the journalists got so used to being snubbed that they've forgotten about giving it a try again. Eh?!

I'm tired of the secrecy also. It pisses me off thinking that some of the ones who have given up on macbook pro upgrades went off and bought one because if apple let us know something about them they would wait if it was soon. I feel like we could be waiting for a long time. MWSF is my worst case scenario. Maybe it will be the best case scenario if it uses the NAND flash memory, for some of us like me. That also might mean more waiting, they might just anounce it to be released later like the itv. well whenever the merom macbook pro comes out i'll have it. I can wait as long is it takes.....as long as its not the scenario we had with the "powerbook g5s".

Yeah, and I have a slight fear that they will upgrade the 15.4" system before the 17" instead of all together. No good reason, only because that is how they first came out... If I have to wait until MWSF to get the new C2D then I will just buy one now and put it up on eBay when the new one hits.

Sick of waiting..

Couldn't wait any longer for a merom mbp. Finally decided to sell my Titanium G4 and bought an iMac 24" yesterday. Should be a nice upgrade for a while. Planning on selling the iMac whenever Apple pulls the trigger on the new mbp merom. Which will hopefully be before Christmas.. ;)
Anyways, Has anyone heard anything about running Windows XP on the new C2D chips? Will they run boot camp just like the Core duo? I will be using CS2 quite a bit and I've heard it runs substantially faster in windows, since it is not universal yet.. Thanks

their comming out tommorrow:D and their gonna be hot

What makes you so sure of this? I'm getting sick of being dissapointed, and may just get a MacBook and say **** Apple for a few years.

they will ship when xserve and shuffle ship, or we will not see merom as a place holder, and go stright for santarosa which makes more since because the heat of merom calls for redisign so maybe apple will hold off and push duo 1 till major santarosa overhal. but really we will see something in the next two weeks, will it be Pro core 2...........maybeeeee!`~

I agree with this. I think apple has to release something within the next coming weeks. It will for sure include the shuffle and xserves very soon. If the long awaited laptop is not released before Thanksgiving, you might as well forget it until Jan.

As a side note and a personal hunch, I believe it is economically favorable to release new laptops soon. If we do not see them before the holidays, Apple obviously is messing up and something went wrong with getting them out on time. Possibly heat issues, who knows exactly. It would be quite embarrassing for apple, however knowing that they can not keep up with other manufactures in technology updates.

we may have to wait till nov 14 so apple can crush macrocrap like they try to crush everyone else. foung bill gates zunaphone the other day and it had a pic or kim joung trool on it :D

Pay attention to what you type before you post. Why would you say **** Apple if you are still going to buy one of their products?
